    Hello!

    I have an older PC....

    EMachines T3508
    Windows XP Home SP3
    Intel Celeron D

I do have a pretty generic sound card which is not an on-board card. I'm not sure if it's even recognized or not, but nothing works when plugged in. Not entirely sure what make/model this card is and don't know how to find that out either.

I also have an on board plug-in port for headphones, speakers etc. This port does not generate audio as well.

In Device Manager I have a yellow question mark next to Other Devices and when I expand Other Devices, listed below, is SM Bus Controller with a yellow question mark with a red x through it.

The sound has worked on this PC in the past. I installed a different power supply and within a few days the sound stopped working....coincidence? Unsure. Since then I've put the original power supply back in trying to restore the PC to it's original state, but nothing works.

I've tried 2 known operable sets of speakers.

Hopefully I gave enough info.....any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

    AA

    Hi there,

Could you try the following driver and get back to us with the results?

    http://global-download.gateway.com/GDFiles/Driver/Audio/Audio_Microsoft_5.10.0.5242_XPx86_A.zip?acerid=633906755896590713&Step1=DESKTOP&Step2=T%20SERIES&Step3=T3508&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=EMACHINES&SC=PA_6E

It's .ZIP file, so it needs to be extracted first.

Once extracted, look for the setup file in the extracted folder or go through the device manager and install the driver by pointing it to the extracted folder.

    Thanks

The link provided didn't work. A blank page pops up and nothing else.

The driver that you were trying to download is actually for your on-board sound. Your report does not show anything regarding your sound card. Are there any yellow exclamation marks under sound in Device Manager?

First make sure that the Windows Audio Service is enabled in Services. You may also want to run dxdiag and see if it gives you any errors.

Try removing and reseating the card. If that does not work, remove it and see if onboard sound works. Make sure onboard sound is enabled in BIOS if it is there. When removed you may find some markings in regards to who manufactured the sound card. Do not worry too much about the SMB controller.

There is no exclamation marks under Sound in Device Manager.

Everything in Windows Audio Service is enabled.

I ran dxdiag and under the audio tab, I clicked on Test DirectSound. I heard nothing. It also says:

"DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (user verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)"

^^^All this was done plugged into my onboard soundcard. I removed the other soundcard before I did any of this.

When I removed the sound card it appears to be a Creative Technology model3892B848.

    Its pretty old.

    Thanks again!

Make sure Onboard sound is enabled in BIOS.
Go into Control Panel>sound and make sure your onboard audio is selected for a playback device under the audio tab. Also make sure mute is not check under the Volume tab.

If that does not help, download the latest Direct X and see if that solves your problem.

If that did not help then install the following.

According to your report, you have an Intel D101GGC Motherboard. Try downloading and installing this audio driver. AUD_XP_5.10.0.6201_PV.exe Then go back to control panel after rebooting and make sure the onboard audio is selected for playback device.

Sorry for the late response, was away for the holidays....

OK, there's a problem with getting into the BIOS.....it's password protected! And off course no one seems to know the password, so that won't work out for us.

I downloaded and installed both the DirectX driver and the Intel audio driver.

Under control panel, my sound playback is set to Realtek HD Audio Output.

    Still no sound...

At this point I'm assuming the onboard audio hasn't worked for quite sometime. With lack of info from the owner, it appears they were using the PCI-E sound card when the audio stopped working.

Again, I have the sound card cuurently removed. It looks like a Creative Technology model 3892B848.

Is it possible to troubleshoot the sound card, or is it too old?

    Thanks again!

I did not find anything for that card that was current. It seems that model was used for a number of OEM cards.

If you want to get into the BIOS, unplug the computer and then remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard. Then push the power button for 30 seconds. Replace the CMOS battery and then plug the computer back in. You should no longer have a password. There may also be a jumper on the motherboard that can used to clear the BIOS, but I have not found any instructions for your computer. If I find it I will post back. You may have to adjust the settings if you have a video card.

You may be better off purchasing a new card. But I am not sure how the BIOS is set up. If there even is a setting for onboard audio. There are many sound cards available at Newegg for a reasonable price. You may want to check some of these.

You could check the sound card on another system to see if it works. If it doesn't, it's time to get a new sound card as suggested below.

I tried removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds but that didn't work. The jumper DID work, so I was able to erase the password.

In BIOS, everything pertaining to AUDIO was enabled.

Is it normal for the onboard audio to stop working? Seems odd.

Anyways, I think my sound card is bad because when I plug it into the MB, Windows doesn't recognize it. Normally I'd see some type of response like a pop up on the lower right saying new hardware detected, but I get nothing. I'mgoing to try another sound card and see if that works.

Also, since removing/installing the MB battery, my clock is way inaccurate. Is there a way to get everything back to normal?

    Thanks again!!!

You should be able to reset the clock in BIOS. Then set the clock in XP.

Edit: Now that you are in BIOS you may want to disable Audio and see if the computer recognizes the sound card. If not, I would reccommend you purchase a Plug and Play card I linked to. Also, make sure that in the BIOS, Plug and Play OS is enabled.

Just a thought, you may want to try seating the card in another PCI slot and see if XP recognizes it as new hardware.

    tgell,

I appreciate your time and efforts. It appears a new sound card will fix the problem.

    Thank you again...

I found another cheap, used sound card. When I plugged it in, Windows recognized it and found drivers for it. On the restart, I disabled the sound in BIOS for onboard sound. Everything works great now!

Still unsure on how or why the onboard sound stopped working. Oh well...

    Thanks!
