I have Windows XP on a Sony Vaio computer and lately I cannot play CD's or DVD's. If I play DVD's I can watch the video but I cannot hear any sound and I get an error message when trying to play CD's. I have checked all of my sound devices in my Computer and it shows everything is working properly. Does anyone have any suggestions what this may be. It acts like my Sound Card is deactivated.

If I use Windows Media Player I receive the following error:

    There is no sound card
You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you do have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

    Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000

If I try to use Real Player JukeBox or any program I receive similar messages.

    Thanks,

    Shannon

first the obvious ... are you sure *ALL* your volume controls aren't muted? including those in windows media player and real player and the sound control panels?

    http://msmvps.com/chrisl/articles/10725.aspx

i came across that in a quick google search ... might help

    edit:

what video card do you have? ...

also goto start>run>type "dxdiag" w/o the quotes .. do the sound tests there ... if you can't hear anything it may be directX at fault

another thing ... if you have a PCI card you might try uninstalling the drivers ... then turning your computer off then taking out the card and putting it in a different PCI slot .. then reinstalling the drivers ... that worked for me once when it was some kind of resource conflict

If the sound card suddenly stopped working, did something happen just before that could have caused it?
Like did you open the computer case?
Or you made changes in BIOS setup?
    Or you reformatted your computer?
Or you physically moved your computer?

If you recently opened the case, reseat the sound card and try another PCI slot.

If you recently went in the BIOS, there may be a resource conflict. I don't know if your motherboard provides onboard sound, if you have a PCI sound card, or if you have both. In my BIOS, sound is in a menu called "Integrated Peripherals" or something under "Sound." If you're using onboard sound only, make sure it is enabled. If you're using onboard sound AND a sound card, try re-installing the sound card, you first need to disable the onboard sound in the bios, or you may get no sound from the PCI card afterward. Once onboard sound is disabled in the BIOS, remove the sound drivers by going to the control pannel --> system --> device manager. Power off the computer. Open the case (touch a metal part of case when dealing with parts). Unseat the sound card. Reseat the sound card. Power the computer. Enable Sound in the BIOS. Reinstall the sound card drivers.

If none of this works, next thing I'd do is swap another sound card (assuming you have a sound card and no onboard sound) to isolate the sound card itself.

I have not installed a sound card in the past so I must have Onboard sound. My computer is a Sony Vaio PCV-RS220. I have been having alot of issues with this computer since acquiring a vicious virus that Phillie Phan on of Spyware side helped me with. I still dont have any sound, some programs wont open such as Word Perfect and my IE is running kind of slow. Would the System Recovery get me out of these problems? I haven't run it before since it deletes everything off of the computer. I have noticed that I have a lot of Windows SP2 hotfixes on my add/remove programs and I have read there are some conflicts with those and some of the sound drivers, so the problem may be related to that.

    Thanks,

    Shannon

One more issue, when trying to download updates from Sony for my computer all of the updates either say it isn't for my computer even though my model number and OS match, or it says it cannot identify my computer and will not let me continue.

    Thanks,

    Shannon

I found out that I have a file missing in my Realtek AC'97 sound card file. I went to realtek to download a file to fix the issue but during the download I received a warning about a Windows Logo not registered with the product download and suggested that I stop the download. Will it hurt anything to continue or do I need to find a new source? I have Windows XP.

    Thanks,

    shannon

where is the link to this download? if it's from realteks site it should be ok, sometimes a driver or whatever just isn't registered w/ microsoft for whatever reason .. I'm assuming you've already concluded that the file is compatible with your system

I actually found a link on the sony website to update this driver, but when I attempt to download the file the process stops and says that it cannot identify my computer. What would cause this, I made sure that I put the correct model number and everything in.

    Thanks,

    Shannon

Ok people, I had almost the exact same problem with Win98se. While mine was not due to a virus(more like headtime and spacing:D LOL), I did discover what my problem was. I, unfortunately, ended up reinstalling before I discovered this though. He is, I believe, missing a file in the device manager. I think it might be a system device not a sound driver.

I believe one of you can help him figure out if this is the problem, and what he's missing.

I reinstalled my drivers more times than I can count, even other drivers, none worked. After I reinstalled I found out I was missing something. I'm not sure what it was as I didn't save a screen shot of my device manager but, I know there's more there now than there was then.

P.S. This is a software problem, not hardware.(unless his speakers are bad)

When I run HJT I found the following:
O23 - Service: Alerter - Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - (no file)

Is there a way to recover this file?
I went to the website to install an update (realtek's) but it didn't help.

    Thanks,

    Shannon
