My computer won't detect my cdrw, It's a philips pcrw1280- cdd 4851 my system is a Compaq Presario windows XP sp2. this happened one other time, I managed to get it going somehow by removing it and checking the connections and editing my system registry by removing the upper and lower lifters and updating my Roxio easy cd creator software and I downloaded new firmware, got it going and once again it's telling me there is no supported drive again. I did evrything the same way as before with no results.. could my cdrw be dead?? Ive only used it about a dozen times. Help.....

If you goto Device Manager is the driver for the CDRW Philips ok or is their a yellow ! mark next to it or is it missing?

I would delete the Philips CDRW from the device manager, uninstall the Roxio software and shutdown then check once more the cables ( even to the point of removing them and putting them back .... better still try a new IDE cable ) boot your pc and XP should re-find and load the drivers then see if its available if so install the Roxio software ( BTW what version is it you have and is that upto date ).

I checked my device manager and there is no Philips CDRW drive and as for my IDE cable... I unplugged my CD-Rom and plugged the IDE cable into my CDRW.. Rebooted and still nothing.. And I have the latest Roxio update I went from version 5.0 to Version 5.3.5.10 Basic version. this cdrw used to be the (F) drive,, that is also gone.

Roxio 5 is not very compatible with XP, version 6 is but this is a side issue as the drive is not recognised in the first place.

Can you test the Philips CDRW in another PC, a friends will do if you dont have a spare PC, just to make sure its working?

Sorry I never answered, workload and a flakey network connection yesterday, kept me off the net.

but good on the working CDRW, strange on your Bro's PC tho... but back to software, yes you have two options,

    1. Nero ( not free but very good )
    2. CDBurnerXP ( Free )

The latest version of Nero (7) looks like it's becoming bloatware.

You can't download the separate modules anymore like you used to with version 6.

You now have to download the entire program at over 100 MB (Also includes Yahoo Toolbar), and you need a whopping 949 MB of hard drive space for installation!

Maybe Symantec bought them out? :)
