   Among other problems with my computer (mainly erratic boot issues), now I cannot open XP's Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL, CTRL-SHFT-ESC, or directly from the Task Bar). Any alternative ways to get this working again?

   First question ....do you have an xp install disc?
   also ...read this to see if it helps ...if not and you have a disc ...two things start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes....if still no go ....report back
