all my applications stopped working and everytime I try to access internet ect.... I get the message that something is infected and .......cant remember the rest.

I started with the malware removal steps and started deleting spyware programs so i just had one. i got an error message that the program uninstall had failed because of an infected file.......

I tried to reboot my laptop and it took me to the boot reg/last known/safe screen

I have tried every option even safe with prompts and all options take my computer to a restart then back to the boot screen. The only sign of anything else i get is when i choose last know configuration and then it actually goes to the windows logo as if its gonna work then a quick blue screen and reboot it goes.

my fiancee will likely kill me when i tell her that chasing a 70's swimsuit model file got me into this. however, if i fix this before then, then she will never ask what happened which would be for the best. \t

thanks in advance for any support i recieve.

Make and model of computer, including any letters and numbers behind the model? Version of OS running and which service packs, if any?

Do you have a genuine windows disk of the operating system installed? Did the computer come with any restore/recovery disks?

    Sony VAIO
    model PCG 6G4L

    Windows xp home edition
    I think service pack 3

I do not have a disk or restore material. There is a proof of licence on the back of my computer. Other then that i do have an xp pro disc that is from my pc computer.

I'm having no luck in Sony support finding your model. I changed the location from US to Canada because if you are in Kamloops, you are in Canada.
The Vaio selection allows me to pick from PCG-505F/505G/505T
    PCG-700 series or PCG-800 series

Look over to the left and you will see that there is a Vaio System Recovery and Restore.

You probably have a recovery partition but most of the info says running Vista.

You need to email support, and find out the specifics of the restore partition. NOTE: if you have to restore, you lose everything.

Also, you can not use an XP Pro disk on a computer running XP Home - the flavor must match.

    thank you for your help.

am i safe to assume that if sony cant help me here that I am going to lose everything?

so therefor I mine as well reformat and install my xp pro that i have?

or is there any benefits to a restore?

If the XP Pro is installed on another computer then NO you can not install it on the laptop.
The benefits to the restore is that you know all the drivers for every bit of hardware will work. When people start doing an install of an OS not from the manufacturer, sometimes the video is wonky, the sound doesn't work, the wifi doesn't connect, etc. It is much safer to use exactly what was on the computer when new.
