erm hey again, we've got a couple of hiccups still going on :cry not to do with outlook tho outlook works great actually.

mainly, when i was on the malware thread, the guy told me to change the accounts so we only had 1 admin, not everyone being an admin. this was fine, but now my sis keeps getting a message telling her that she has 'insufficient rights' to update adobe :( the only option in the box it to click ok. it comes up every time she logs n and its annoying her.

That is correct and how a non admin account works. It prevents things from being installed without proper rights. Running on an admin account is how Malware can install itself.

How old is your sister? Which adobe is she trying to update? Reader? If you have the admin account, you should be able to update it and it should be done for all accounts.

i know thats how an admin account works...

my sis is 17. I'm guessing its reader, but i think before changed the accounts to limited she must have clicked 'remind me later'. I've tried logging on as the admin, and the popup when i log in that tells me i need an update isn't there :confused I also opened reader, and tht didn't tell me i needed an update, so...?

I've attached the message she gets btw

thanks for the quick reply :)

I have to run out, but have moved this question to it's own thread. Hopefully, someone will come by and help!:)

Couldn't you change her rights to "admininstrative", run the updater, then change back to limited user.

I agree that there was probably an update sitting there when you reduced her priviliges and this should fix that.

    Hi again runningcart.
When you come across this admin rights problem, you can often get around it by right clicking on the program shortcut (or the exe file) and look for Run as... If it's there, click on it and select Run as administrator. When it opens, try the update option. Hopefully your sis can do this on Adobe. I think Adobe has that option - I can't check cos I use Foxit Reader (which is smaller and faster).
In regard to Admin accounts, you should not actually have anyone using an admin account as their regular account. Everyone should be using reduced privileges, and keep the admin account just for when you really need it.
    BTW, nice background. :)

    @laura - thanks for making a new thread :)
@GCWesq - i did your idea, and it installed adobe reader 8.1.3, the i tried logged off and the pc crashed :/ (screen went black and nothing would do anything)
using the 'normal' admin account when i was changing my sis to an admin it installed 8.2
then logged back into my sis and found the error message still came up when she was on limited account :confused
@BrandyPeppy - tried your idea after this and it installed reader 8.1.5 ... getting a bit like wtf!! but it worked, so i've no idea how she manages to be an update behind everyone else but the message is gone :) thanks for the help

The latest secure version of Adobe Reader 8.2.x is 8.2.3; the quickest way to get it updated is to manually download the incremental updates (on the Admin account):
    then apply them in sequence.

The easiest way to avoid such troubles in the future is to install updates when they become available, as published on http://www.majorgeeks.com/.
