I started with what I thought was a problem with firefox: I'd double click on the shortcut or start via the menu. It would appear to initiate, spinning blue disk but then nothing. I uninstalled it and re-installed it but still no joy.

It now appears to be any exe file, outlook, word, excel, any video player or any downloaded setup file.

    I'm running windows 10, avast anti virus(free) on a sony VAIO VPCEB2C5E

I managed through sheer luck to get chrome to work.

The only time I have seen all .exe files not being able to run it was malware-related.
But first, open Program Files and check whether the .exe files will run from there.

malware was my first thought but I'd thought i would ask you guys if there was anything obvious first. Malware Bytes will not run either

If the OP can not run any exe files, there isn't much we could do in malware. He has to solve the exe file issue first.

I see you got Spybot to run and that cleared your exe file issue. You can now run the Read and Run First instructions that Chaslang gave you to see if there in malware still on your system.

Run Windows System File Checker ("sfc /scannow")

System File Checker is a handy tool included with Windows that allows you scan for and restore corruptions in Windows system files.

To run System File Checker (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):
    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Type command in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
    3. While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
    4. You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
    5. Click Yes.
    6. A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
    7. Type sfc /scannow and hit ENTER.
    8. System File Checker will begin scanning for Error 0x93 and other system file problems (be patient - the system scan may take a while).
    9. Follow the on-screen commands
How to run chkdsk (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):
    7. Type chkdsk /f and hit ENTER.
    8. chkdsk will begin scanning for hard disk corruption that could be causing 0x93 STOP errors.
    9. Follow the on-screen commands.
This is one of my previous post.

I would recommend on running these first to make sure your system is intact.

I have seen a dozen or so machines with this problem. In my cases it was the latest version of Avast( free and paid). To check, right-click on the Avast icon on the taskbar, then left-click on Avast shields control and lastly on Disable permanently. If things work now, uninstall Avast, then use Avastclear to remove remains and then install Avira or another antivirus.

As I said I have had dozens with this problem the past couple of weeks. None of these computers had malware etc. I also have had dozens without the problem. Nothing seems to be common. Win 7, Win 8.1, Win 10. All different brands of machines. I had a couple that would not even boot. Found many others on the Avast forums with same problem. Shame as it was always been my go to antivirus.

I have seen this error all the time when Avast caused problems.
