Nonstandard DVDs from VCR style DVD burners

I was listening to a friendly aquantance talk about some of his problems handling DVDs made from his Panasonic DVD burner, the kind that is a stand alone applience and has a built in tuner similar to a VCR, and realized we had a similar problem. This guy is a low level computer geek, and a technician. I solved mine by building up a computer to the point I could make standard DVDs with it, and only use my Magnavox DVD recorder as a VCR standin, and not very often at that.

Is there a codec or what involved here? The DVDs made by these VCRs play OK on itself, but is useless on regular DVD players. Forget about making copies with these suckers, unless you want to use a VCR to go into the AV jacks.

 

The Panasonic DVD burner I have is similar to your friendly aquantance's and I have no problems playing DVD(s) burned with it on other units. Is it possible that the disks are not being finalized?

 

No, their definately being finalized. I'm pretty sure about it being a nonstandard format on these burners, which is a shame. They'd be a lot more useful. Part of the problem is they are cheap, TiVo does it with no sweat.

 

So after I got the money for refunding the first two that didn't work. I wound up buying this. Installation was a little rocky but it works.

 

If you can put that DVD back in and still record on it, then I'll agree with plastidust, that disk is not finalized.
