    hi guys/gals and geeks

i have abit of a problem with 3 new Nortel bay switch's. i am new too these nortel switches and have followed step by step instructions from the manuals But the problem i am haveing is that when trying to connect too the Console port using a DB-9 Striate through cable Female - Female 9pin. i use Hyperterminal for windows XP to connect too the bay switches useing the settings VT-100, 9800, N-8-1, flow control off, ASCII.

now i get it connected or so it says and the instructions tells me too press Ctrl + Y too activate the menu of the bays but when i press the keys nothing happens. i have been stuck at this point for a few days now and i just can't figure out why it wont get the menu up.

if you have any suggestions on away around this problem or another program i can use instead of hyperterminal for windows xp it would be much apprechiated if you could let me know.

    Thank you

As they're a DCE connection, using a straight through cable is right. The connection settings for the VT100 emulator might work better if you choose:
    VT100, 9600, N-8-1, Flow control to Xon/Xoff

    Additionally:
Terminal Preferences: Function, Arrow, and Control keys active
    Buffer size set to 24

Also - make sure your CAPS LOCK key ins't depressed (active). Some emulators get confounded when it's active before you fire them up.

    I hope that helps. :)

Thanks for the info and reply prometheos.

i have managed to get it working now, the settings were all correct it was the cable that was wrong, i used a detector too test all the pins in the cable and found out that the 9pin DB9 Female - Female cable was a cross over cable. i now have a 9pin DB9 Male - Female straite through cable with a Female - Female 9 pin Gender Bender (converter), this seemed to do the trick as i can now get the menu up when i hit Ctrl + Y.

It was only a matter of time before i found it out but there is no harm in asking for help when you need it :)

    Thank you

P.S i will help with what i can on any problems other people have on the forums.

And keep watching the skees!!! i mean Skys
