    Hello,
I've got Norton 2004 Internet Security installed, recently the Intrusion Detection switched off, every time I try to put it on I get the message "failed to save settings, please verify your windows account is not restricted". I read using the live update might fix it and if not try uninstalling and re installing it,I've tried both and still have the same problem. Does anyone know how to fix this? and what the difference is between the Intrusion Detection and the Norton firewall?
    Thanks,
    Fangy.

Had a look at the link you gave me, still couldn't fix my problem though, I've been running Norton for 6 months without any problems, had everything set up untill one day the detection intrusion switched off and now gives me the message "failed to save settings....." I've been over Norton's site they said running live update's should fix it and if not, uninstall then re install it, which I've done 3 or 4 times. any idea's?
    Thanks.

THe only way I was able to fix a Norton problem similar to yours (admittedly back a few years) was to deinstall the program, chuck the CD in the rubbish and install Avast. Running Avast now for 2 years plus - updates frequently every 2 days or so, has done well to protect me and sometimes kill a virus.
Pending some better advice to handle Norton I recommend the above
    Cheers

If you really want to try and reinstall nortons, first before running the uninstaller, run msconfig and untick all norton related startups then go into services and set to disabled everything nortons.
Reboot and uninstall.Reboot and reinstall.May help.

But IMHO I would take the advice of the other posters and try some other security configuration as nortons ain't that good and dare I might say that a virus has more than likely disabled it.

When services will not restart it is best to reload. The best uninstaller is SymNRT

First uninstall NIS thru Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Click the following link to begin downloading RnisUPG.exe .

Save the file to your Windows desktop. If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may see the message "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" If so, click Run.

On the Windows desktop, double-click RnisUPG.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.

    Restart the computer when prompted.

    Now Reinstall NIS.

Tried uninstalling Norton using RnisUPG.exe, got it to uninstall ok but when I re installed it, it wouldn't update and cut off my connection, tried several times before giving up. I used Norton because of the Productivity control, can anyone suggest another antivirus/firewall that has the ability to block adult sites etc.
    Cheers.

ZoneAlarm Pro with Web Filtering, or Zone Alarm Security Suite.

If you use Internet Explorer, you can also try the Content Advisor under Tools, Internet Options and then the Content Tab.

I had NIS 2004 for a year up to about 2 months ago. I had nothing but trouble with it from the get go. It would constantly indicate problems and their solution was always uninstall and reinstall which was a lengthy process for my Windows 98. I talked to their tech dept a couple of times and got the feeling they didn't know what they were doing and that all they were interested in was charging for their service. After my subscription ran out, I deleted it (which was quite a process in itself) and installed Zone Alarm firewall and AVG anti-virus, both free, and haven't had a problem since.
