Norton error...a shorter method?

A couple days ago, NIS's Intrusion Detection decided to stop working. Whenever I open up the NIS main menu or try to turn on Intrusion Detection, it gives the "if this error occurs again, uninstall and reinstall" (code 5004,183) error three times, sometimes with the code 5004,184.
I tried the first couple things from the Symantec Knowledge Base (disabling and checking permissions, re-running LiveUpdate, etc), but they didn't work. Before I go deleting registry entries and re-downloading every single update to date (which would take quite a while on our dial-up connection), I was wondering if anyone else got this error and figured out a shorter, simpler way of fixing Intrusion Detection without having to uninstall/reinstall or practically "reformat" the program and re-download everything.

It's not that I don't trust their methods, but I had an issue with the Quarantine Log a few months ago, and a simple registry tweak fixed it, as opposed to the long unneeded Symantec methods.

    ShockTroop,

Not sure this is what you want to hear and this may start a flame war  but I had the same problems about a year ago with Norton and found the best way out was to get rid of Norton and install something lighter and easier on the system. If you decide to do this make sure to use their utility after you uninstall to make sure you get all the parts and pieces, you should be able to find it here:

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...6aaa94&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg=ag

The use CCleaner which you can find here on MajorGeeks at:

Then try some of the free antivirus and firewalls that are suggested here on MajorGeeks. I think you will be a lot happier.

Hope I don't offend you or anyone with my opinion and advice,

Ditto BeenThereDoneThat's statement ShockTroop a lot of folks here at MG have had issues with Symantec and its bloatted programs, a quick check of the "Software Forums" will show you that like you, many have had similar problems. I also believe that there is a "Norton Removal Tool" available here at MG to help you get rid of all the "Hidden Files" that Norton is well known for!!!!!  Hope that helps

    BCGray,

You were right, did not think about MG having the Norton Removal tool. Here it is:

Don't want to start or get into a flame war with anyone, but since my experience if I see the name "Symantec" I stay away from it. Really sad because they used to be so good.

I'm already aware of all the alternatives (and use them on my other computer) and that others have had this problem and all that, but I might as well make use of the remaining months of my Norton subscription (until the end of November IIRC). This is why I asked, otherwise I would've (completely) uninstalled it and started using something else by now. Once the subscription has expired, Norton will cease to exist on my system.

Did you try the Fix this for me option at the Symantec site?
