Norton/IE issue?

Norton Internet Security does not allow me to log in. It is set for Administrator, but won't allow me to change it. It is currently turned off, and won't allow me to turn it on, either. When I try to do either, I get the message, "Must be logged in as Administrator to change." My XP account has administrator ability, but is in my name, not called admin.

I don't know if it is related, by there are several sites (Yahoo e-mail, My Space) that I can't access. Related? I get the "Page Can't be displayed message". Other sites (CNN, etc) I can hit no trouble.

I'm worried that I'm surfing without Norton protection, and that something may have gotten on to my HP Pavillion that is causing the site blocking.

Any ideas? HP suggested non destructive reinstall of software. Normally not a problem, but I can't find the product validation key for Norton to reinstall it (lost it I think).

    Any ideas??

Xp home or pro? ....safe mode into admin account and see if you can reset that way.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion.
    XP Home.

    I'll try it.

Don't know if this makes a difference, but I just got the PC back from HP repair (new motherboard after Ethernet went bad). I deleted the HP Tech's account. Could that be a problem, or could the tech have inadvertently done something to cause this issue?

Good question ...would suggest a restore before the tech account deletion, then rename it as admin ....was it passworded? Again, safe mode and change the password.

    Great. I'll try it.

Any idea what's stopping me from getting to some websites and not others? I tried changing all settings in IE (plus the monitoring program I have Watchdog). Is there a virus or malware that would cause this?

Ban websites, which will disable the PC from visiting any websites having the banned word. Every employer is concerned with two things, visit no porn sites and visit no job sites. Porn kills times and Job Sites can cause to brain drain. You have to take care of each and everything. Why to take a chance and why to catch your employees doing all this when you can bar them from doing anything against your wishes right from the outset. Use WatchDog software to ban all the websites you don't want your employees to visit.

Understood, but this is on my home PC. I use Watch Dog to limit my daughter's times online only. I have not set it up to ban any sites for me or her. I've used the program for a while now; the website problem is new (this week).
