I am using nis and I like the intrusion detection log file,
and the virus protection as well,
but the rest of the program is a little quirky for my tastes.

Can anyone recommend a stand alone program that has a good
intrusion detection log viewer like nis?
I have used the free version of zonealarm, but it's not
    as detailed as nis is.

What I plan on doing is going back to the stand alone
norton antivirus along with whatever somebody may suggest here.

Well, I would ask if you are a new user to NIS and caution you on the fact that NIS will be buried deep within your registry. When you try to uninstall it, it can be nuts. Also, this program takes up a lot of space on your system.

I uninstalled mine, and my computer has much more space, runs better and I would not go back to Norton.

I actually didn't have any problem with that. I have a dual proc
scsi Tyan K7 mobo with 2gb of registered ddr. I never even
knew it was running. I just prefer running stand alone apps
when possible, mainly so I can pick and choose each program seperately.

Your system sounds more like a server than a normal PC. Unless it is a cad/drafting type of workstation.

Sygate personal firewall has detailed intrusion detection. But, what exactly do you need? Do you want something that tells you in details what is intruding your system?

NIS has built in virus, parental security, firewall, and a few other items. What are your needs?

The Tyan K7 is a server mobo, but I'm using it as a desktop.
I like the server quality, especially the scsi drives, but I just use
    it for general surfing.

I do like that NIS has all those features, but it was limited on the
apparent settings when an alert would pop up. I had a couple of those
come up (with the firewall) where I wasn't able to grant one time access.
It was always, or none. I don't like that. But the log file was superb.
I still have a working copy of Norton antivirus
which is my favorite symantec product, so I'm just going to go
    back to stand alone products.

I'm finding that the intrusion detectors go farther than standard
firewalls do. It's going to be the next big thing in computer
protection. They can stop worms, trojans, spyware, hacking
    attempts, etc....
The high end systems run into the hundreds of
dollars for a good program, probably at the server level though.
