Norton IS question

    Couple of questions:

    1. Does anyone know of a chat group or Message board, etc. for NIS? I don't want to have to pay Symantic to ask a question about using the software or removing viruses, etc.

    2. If you use NIS and are totally up to date with virus protection and Firewall enabled, how could you still get a virus that was created, lets say, last year on your computer? I mean, i do a scan and NIS finds or detects a virus. If you click on the virus link, NIS opens a window that says it was created sometime in 2004 (for example). Shouldn't the software have caught and deleted it before it got onto the harddrive?

    Thanks,

    Stevo

    I agree wholeheartedly.
But norton's can't stop you from say...clicking a link or downloading something. what it does is catch it when one of the beasties gets through..or at least it's supposed to...either way it has to get there before it can be deleted.

I also know that Norton Personal Firewall failed their own security check on there website. So it wont be good on NIS. There antivirus is good at detection virus, worms etc. But if you get infected and need help removing a virus, worm etc its $29.95 per incident as they say.

If you are going to use an antivirus software use a free antivirus like Avast or AVG and use a free firewall like Outpost or ZoneAlarm

But if you choose to use these only run ONE antivirus and ONE firewall so you dont get problems.

    Thanks for all the input.

I'd love a better firewall/av program to use, just aren't sure what the best combo to use. NIS has been very good to me up to now.

I'll try the above suggestions, but if anyone has other recs, i'm all ears.

    Thanks.

I use AVG and zone alarm and have for awhile. Norton's failed me terribly so I don't use anything they make now.
both programs are good and free.

I use Avast and Sygate, and haven't had any issues!

I use the free versions of Avast and Zonealarm, and they have performed flawlessly for months. I had used Norton I.S. prior to this, and had no problems with it - but the program over the years has become, IMO, bloated and uses too many system resources. Avast and Zone have a much smaller footprint. Granted, both programs require a little tweaking for a LAN environment, but nothing overly complicated. Zonealarm has a "Antivirus Monitoring" function which does not recognize Avast, but it's not a vital part of the firewall.

Just a little add on for Avast which I have been using for about 18 months now. When you click on the little blue ball it updates very very quickly - seconds in my case on ADSL and updates much more frequently than some of the others including the BA Norton. Avast also has a Virus Recover Data Base included which lights ups every now and then and saves the important bits in the event that a virus does get thru. And as of yesterday when I was going to placesI should not have ventured, it sounded its siren and saved me. I love it - its free - I have told Avast so, and I hope they make lots of dollars out of it from the Pro users so that it can remain free for us cash strapped little guys.

I liked there traffic monitoring too, but i recently i got rid of Sygate Personal Firewall Pro for Oupost Firewall Pro which has more options too it then Sygate Pro did. And seems i am getting more protection from Outpost ;)

Outpost is freeware and shareware but the shareware version has more options to it. Outpost Pro also has a trial version you can try.

    Outpost Firewall Free

    Outpost Firewall Pro

But if you try outpost you have to unistall sygate.
