This is my first post. I have Norton Internet Security 2005 Anti spy ware Edition . up to date. When I scanned full scan the scan locked and my arrow
or window XP would not work at all. The last file scanned was C :\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\ dialer.exe. Spybot worked said OK and ADaware was ok. Why is Norton locking up and what can I do to fix.I appreciate help.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

I a little confuse by your message. You said "Window XP would not work at all" then you are saying Spybot and Ad-Aware are okay and also you are here posting. Is it just Norton you are having problems with or is your PC actually broken (not running).

    What is meant by:
    What is an "arrow"?

Thanks for answering if I scan Norton , Trend Micro or Spydoctor it freezes the cursor arrow when the last file scanned is C :\ windows\ servicepackfiles\i386\ dialer.exe .My computer works fine other then not scanning virus and if I go to C drive service pack and to i386 to dialer or dhtmled.ocx the whole computer freezes. I am not real computer savy thanks.

Those are both valid Microsoft files. Info on dialer.exe is in the below link.

Perhaps you have a disk error or corrupted file and just need to run a disk Error Check.

Right click on your C drive from Windows Explorer and select Properties. Then click Tools and you will see the Error-checking option.

My Norton still freezes before scan is over. If I go to C drive to the dialer exe in i386 my computer locks up. This cannot be normal I did disk check,
What do I need to do?Thanks

Explain what you mean by this!

Does this mean if you just go into the i386 folder your PC locks up?
Does it mean that you are trying to run the dialer.exe program that is in that folder?

Right now I do not believe you are having malware problems but the only way to be sure is to have you run the below steps. Make sure while running all these tools you keep track of any lockups and which programs lock up (if any).

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis
    .

Thanks if I go to that folder with Norton to scan when I try to open the file
the computer to scan it locks up. I also just went into C drive without Norton
and the computer locked up after going to dialer before I could open it. I will
go thru steps and get back with you in few days I am not computer savy and
I will get my brother an engineer to help . Regards

Don't go to that folder anymore! Just see what all the scans find and if any of them get hung up in the same place. However, I do not believe the reason you are locking up at that point is due to malware.

Try scanning from safe mode and if it still locks up, try delete that whole i386 folder. Problem is that it may lock up while trying to delete the folder. Still sounds like a possible disk error or file corruption error. Not sure why the scanners do not have a critical error trap routine built in that gets them around this. That would be poor programming. But maybe the error is such that it cannot be trapped!

Re: Norton scan locks up bump

You did not do the other scans of the READ ME. Is this because the system locks up?

You have no malware evidence in your HJT log. Your problem is not malware related but more of a physical problem. Try discussing it in the Software Forum. That folder is only required if you ever want to backout (uninstall) the service pack that you upgraded too. At this point you should know whether you are ever going to do that or not. I would still say the deleting the folder may help but again if the problem is physical in nature the same thing may happen when the files are being deleted.

Re: Norton scan locks up bump

Okay! That is was what I expected and why I suggested just removing the folder.
