    Hi forum:
    :) :)

Recently I installed Norton antivirus 2006 on preexisting Norton internet security 2005. I thought it would be a smooth patch up upgradation but I was wrong in such assumption.

Since that time, I have been facing following problems in windows and office:rolleyes:  :

    1. I see about 5 small error windows on starting my laptop. It reads as "A necessary file could not be loaded. c:\program files\norton internet security\ norton antivirus\navoptrf.dll then .....\navpw32.dll...defalert.dll....ccimscan.dll....statushp.dll

Every time I have to close these five error windows (error 1002,1 Symantec) before using windows.

    2. Everytime I open microsoft word or excel or powerpoint, a message window appears 3 times stating that "the feature u r trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Nav.MSI' in the box below." The use source box shows "c:\dell\kc242\nav"

As the vendor has not provided me original installation software CDs, I don't know how to go for this. Only after closing this message window 3 times I microsoft word/powerpoint/excel gets opened.

    3. On top of this, I am unable to run antivirus scan either from internet security (which doesn't show the norton antivirus now) or norton antivirus 20006.

I tried to uninstall norton antivirus/norton internet security from the system but now it cannot be uninstalled.

I don't want to use system restore at this point as I have to backup several important downloaded programs and files and don't have enough time/patience for that.

Please tell me how can I remove this nasty patch of norton antivirus 2006 from my system and make my system as before with norton internet security 2005. Tell me in simple steps as u guys usually do. I have tremondous faith in all of u and hope to find a solution as early as possible with ur help.

    Thanking u.

    With regards,

    pasand

It looks like you may have real problems because it seems that Symantec/Norton don't know what causes this problem either and want you to fill in a survey: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...6006ae52c?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam&seg=ag

Their suggestion is to "run a removal utility to remove leftover components of a previous version of the program..." and I would try this first.

Your suggestion of going back to a restore point is valid but is there not a restore point after "several important downloaded programs and files" and before installing NAV 2006? I would suggest backing up your files in any case as it will help you timewise in the future should you need to recover lost or damaged items.

    Side note:

There is a similar problem with even earlier Norton products: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...c006ae137?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam&seg=ag ...here the suggestion is to uninstall and then reinstall the product.

    Hi everybody!:) :)

Thank u very much for these prompt replies and useful suggestions. Now I have removed the norton malware from my system. Feeling a lot of relief as there are no error messages now on restart and my MS office products are also working smoothly, that too without a backdated system restore! Thank u once again for curing me of this norton phobia and nightmares.

Now what next? I have a backup copy of norton internet security on my flash usb drive and can reinstall it, but now I want ur suggestions for any alternatives to it. Is there any other freeware product with antivirus + internet security + firewall + antispyware utilities together? Does it provide continuous free updates without expiry notices (unlike norton, which kept on sending expiry notices and wanted their updates to be purchased). I am running windows xp sp2 operating system on my laptop and I think it provides good inbuilt firewall. I will depend on ur suggestions before taking any decision in this matter.

    With warm regards,

My PC has recently recovered from an infection, it disabled Norton instantly. Now i have a disk with all the software from (click)this thread on malware removal, and the up to date post in a text file on the same disk. I know now if something goes wrong i've got some useful software all on one disk.
I'm currently using Kerio Firewall, AVG anti-virus and Counterspy. They work fine and i'm confident in their ability.

Well, why doesnt the uninstall work? And you probably need to backup your programs, then use system restore.

    Hi!

It showed file in use or some message that I now don't remember exactly. Anyway it needed the norton removal kit to kick it off from the system.
    It worked smoothly.

    Regards,

    Dr. Pasand
