Something keeps turning ON my Balloon tips.
I just use TweakUi to turn them back OFF, but would like to know what is turning them ON.

I like to try and keep control over what goes on in my PC.
I really dislike programs that think they know what I want. Bazza

You could export the corresponding entry in the registry by a simple copy/paste of this line into your runbox ....
    regedit /e c:\balloontips.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced"

Go back to your runbox, type < c:\ > enter .... find/open balloontips.txt in Notepad and add on it's own line ....
"EnableBalloonTips"=dword:00000000 .... doesn't matter where in the lineup (1 is enabled.).

Save as DisableBalloonTips.reg > all files. Now remerge that file by double-clicking or right click > merge.
If memory serves correct, you'll need to re-boot for the changes to take place.

    OR:
To Disable The Notification Area Balloon Tips
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
    2. Navigate to the following subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
    3. Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips.
    4. Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0.
    5. Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on.
These steps disable all Notification Area balloon tips for this user. There is no way to disable balloon tips for specific programs only.

Hey Bazza do you run Advanced Windows Care at all?

In the System Analysis tool on that program it will turn the balloon tips back on by default.

    That's it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks a bundle, BirdBath. :)
Another mystery solved, thanks to you and MG. :D
Will have to check out AWC's defaults a bit more carefully.

BTW: To anyone interested, Advanced Windows Care is a great program.
One warning, latest version on MG is a beta version and I haven't used it, yet.
I use a previous version. Will download new version soon.

Take all the normal precautions before using it. (this applies to any BETA version).

    @BirdBath@,
is there any way to get AWG to ignore my desired setting (do not show Balloon tips) apart from me unchecking the "error" that it finds each time I run it, and ignoring (ie not "fixing" the "error") the error message, each time.

There doesn't appear to be a method to set a default.
Hope you know what I am getting at.

As I mentioned it is no big deal as my desired setting is easily reset using TweakUi, and thanks to you, I now know what is causing it, which was my main query. Bazza

After you run the tool and the check box line your talking about shows up,

Right click on the line of text.

a drop down window should come up and you can choose the option to ignore that "problem"
