not starting up all the way

my computer will not start up all the way. It says windows root 7\system 32\ntoskrml.exe. is corrupt. If I put my recovery disc. in it will not run it says SETUPREG.HIV error code 257.

We could really use some details here.... what version of Windows are you running? Is it the Windows7 RC? I say this because you posted this: "It says windows root 7\system 32\ntoskrml.exe. is corrupt". Also, at what point during the re-install from your system CD do you get the "SETUPREG.HIV error code 257" error message? Are you trying a safe OS reload? Are you trying a full clean install???

My computer is windows xp. It has error before it starts up the screen is still black.

since yours is error #2, look over the 4 ways to fix this.

suggests as one thing to try, replacing the keyboard. It's an easy enough thing to try. If you do not have a spare keyboard, ask a friend to borrow one just to see if that is the issue.
