    Hey Jazz!

(Presuming you are in Win 7 or Vista, it could be the same process in other OS i'm not sure, anyway ) Please click start, in the search bar type "Device manager". Open it up. Report back if you see any Yellow ! Marks.

Now i won't be back on the forum till tomorrow night, so if you reply before then you might have to wait for someone else, or just have to wait a bit for me to reply.

    Hi

As you have a Laptop (Toshiba A30) and if you have as mentioned above no yellow ! marks in device manager then you should be fine as I checked a few drivers at the reference page for your model laptop HERE and the main drivers and the Ati video one are latest Toshiba released for your Windows XP, so if the laptop driver wise is working ok then I would leave alone,

Laptops can be very fussy at what drivers you install on them, in the main your need the manufacturers ones and once a model is discontinued the latest drivers stop being released but this is ok and nothing to really worry about. DO not rely on these so called driver finders as they just do not find the correct drivers in the majority of cases, even though they state you are out of date, installing what they suggest can cause some hardware to fail to work due to the wrong driver installed and can in some cases be a pain in the butt to get working again without uninstalling and reinstalling a multiple set of drivers.

Drivers are what allow the various peices of hardware in your PC to work in the operating system of your choice, the main one is the Chipset this one controls the CPU, Northbridge and Southbridge etc as well as allowing other hardware drivers to be correctly identified, for example USB, Audio, Network/LAN and Video.

What devices have the red Xs? Those would be devices that XP couldn't find drivers for so those devices are not active. What happens when you run Windows Update? Do you get any optional updates found? usually that's where MS will have any updated drivers it found for your hardware.

    hi Sam,

and thanks so much for your help, i deleted those with the red xs, i hope thats ok? and i have changed over to firefox now, should i go in through ie to do updates? as when i try through firefox i am told to go to the download centre instead of doing it autimatically like it used to?:wave

Go to Start, Programs and Windows Update should be up near the top. Double click on it and it'll connect to the Update Center.

Deleting the red Xs is OK, if the devices are still active the next time you reboot, Windows will just put the Xs back again.
If after you run Update the devices still have Xs but everything is running as it should, right click on each one and select Disable. This will stop XP from trying to find and load drivers for them.

It sounds like you may have corrupted a/o missing files. Is there a partition (a drive letter) that may be labeled with your brand of computer, or Drivers, or recovery? If there is that may have an option to create recovery disks so you could run Repair or re-install XP.
Look in your Start Menu-Programs for anything saying your computer brand as the options to repair or create recovery disks may be there.
I know my wife's Dell has a partition with drivers for her system and my HP laptop has a partition to create recovery disks.

yep went to the toshiba console, nothing there, except customizing, network and support and there is nothing to create recovery disc under those.

In reference to post 8, sounds like you overlooked the box that was checked that makes Firefox the default browser.
Reason for going slow and reading before clicking.

That is why you can't use IE.
I ran into the same problem. Couldn't even get to Windows Update.
Had to uninstall the fox and remove ALL traces of Mozilla before I could use IE again. Only used IE for Windows Updates, but that is beside the point.

so, what do you recommend? what browser do you use generally? if you only use ie for updates. and are you suggesting i delete fox?

Uninstall, then re-install. SLOWLY and uncheck the box that makes it the default browser. You can then use IE.
    My personal browser is Opera.

Go to Start, Search. Type in Mozilla, go to all sites shown, and remove any traces left,.
Go and reinstall a new copy of IE if still unable after searching.

I run 3 different browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome). Firefox set to default. Has no effect on Windows Update running IE to update.

Try using Firefox, go to Microsoft's site, download IE 8 and install that.
