Notebook is seriously bogged down

Hi ya.

I am have a problem with my HP Pavilion notebook seriously bogging down and locking up. It is like something is eating all my resources and the computer becomes non responsive. This is has been an ongoing problem for a few weeks now, and I have run all the normal stand-bys (Spybot, Adaware, Registry Mechanic, FreeRam XP Pro). I had norton anti-virus and firewall on here, until a couple weeks before the problem began.

I am running Windows XP Home edition (release 2), I have already transitioned all my browsing over to Mozilla FireFox, because of how badly IE has been affected by the problem. Now Firefox is having the same problems that IE was having, and I really am not looking forward to transitioning to another browser.

I know that I run too may things open at once (1-2 browser windows, may have 1-3 tabs on each, and usually yahoo messenger), but I have run this way and the problem was never this big until recently. I fear that I have some kind of virus or malware on here. So I downloaded Hijack this and am attatching the results log here as well.

I am comfortable going into the regedit and making any changes that you all deem necessary, I just not confident in my own knowledge of what belongs there.

Software on my System includes:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002, service pack 2
Firefox is ver 2.0.0
IE ver most recent version i believe.
My Anti-virus and firewall are provided by Bresnan Cable, my broadband connect provider. the name of the program is Curtain (or at least that is how it shows in the task manager).

Hardware:
HP Pavilion
Processor 3000+
787 MHz, 384 MB of Ram
Virtual Memory is set to 1024 MB.

Any help will be appreciated.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

CounterSpy

AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy

Bitdefender - from step 6

Panda Scan - from step 6

runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat

newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat

HijackThis (This should be the last to run and attach).

NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
