'Nother friend, 'nother problem Admin password

My friend's husband died unexpectedly :cry He had an admin password on the pc. Most of the HD is password protected with his password. I read somewhere else that she might try booting up in safe mode to delete the password but that hasn't worked for her. Nor can she reformat. Is there anything that can be done to reclaim the pc?
