Yeah, so I turned on my computer today, then logged on to my username and only my background showed up. None of the icons or toolbar were there.

I went to the Windows Task Manager and then ran new task and typed in explorer.exe. I have this problem every now and then and that usually works, but this time it didn't.

    Any suggestions?

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

I can't even do a system restore or get to the control panel. Is there anyway I can do it from the Windows Task Manager. I need an answer asap.

    Thank you.

    HI!
    You could try THIS:

If you have DSL or Cable, follow these instructions:

    1. Ctrl+Alt+Delete>File>New Task (Run...)

    2. Type: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/shellfix.reg

    3. Click Ok and it will prompt to download shellfix.reg file

    4. Click "Run" file. Do not save it on your desktop, or anywhere on the computer.

    5. After it runs, reboot your computer and the problem will be gone

If you do not have DSL or Cable:

    Follow these steps:
    1. Ctrl+Alt+Delete>File>New Task (Run...)
    2. Type: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/shellfix.txt
    3., 4., and 5. above
The shellfix.txt repairs the corrupted explorer.exe

Well, I restored the comp to May 1st.

Still the start up doesn't work. Only the background shows up. So right now I'm running Trend Micro.

If anyone has any kind of info on how to fix this problem please let me know.

Did you try Toni's suggestion, it's reported as solving the problem on other forums?

    What is your operating system?

Does it start OK in Safe Mode?

Do you have a Windows CD?

Also, unplug any devices like iPods etc.

Yes, I tried Toni's suggestion and I got an error message saying the file or whatever does not excist.

    Windows XP

It did the same thing in safe mode. No toolbar or icons on desktop. Just the wallpaper.

And no I don't have a Windows CD, but I were to have one would I have to reinstall it?

And then I tried going on AIM, so at the task manager I typed in "aim.exe" and it said, "idlemon.dll could not be found" Or something like that.

    Not necessarily.

You might get away with doing a Repair, or running System File Checker.
