I got a popup saying that I have some files on my computer from places I haven't visited that I should remove with a drive cleaner. Can someone explain for a novice what a drive cleaner is -- what's the difference between that and spyware (I have microsoft Beta), or anti-virus (I have AVG), where is the best place to get one, how does it work, and how do I control the files that are removed from my computer? Thanks. Also, how complicated a process is it?

    Hi Anabel

What application pops up and tells you this or is it one that wants you to click a link that takes you to a webpage to download software called Drive Cleaner?

Drive Cleaner is known as a Rogue Application and exagerates the items it finds or alledges to find on your PC to get you to pay to install it to remove things that it finds or alledges to find, DO NOT install it and dont pay anything. http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2006-062217-0726-99

If you have Microsoft Antispywware beta that your way out of date as that is not called Windows Defender and is a final product, so you will need to uninstall Antispyware beta and install Defender http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4466.html

but what I would do as your getting these Drive Cleaner popups is to run through the below:

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

I have moved your thread to malware as I feel this is the best area for your problem above to be looked at as the malware guys are specialists in this area.

Those instructions were kind of scary so before I tackled them I decided to read through all the forum posts to see how other people were dealing with them and from what I've read it looks like I probably have the about:blank problem. The about:blank URL showed up exactly when my IE browser updated itself to IE 7 a couple months ago, so I just thought that was some weird quirk in the program. And it only comes up when I hit that "blank page" tab and is easily redirected by me to another URL of my choice. I've never been directed to any advertising or pop-ups except for today when I got that Microsoft.com dialogue box about getting drive cleaners, which I X'd out of. From what I'm seeing in this forum I have a bad feeling I'm about to get clobbered.

Does that sound like what I have?

OK. So I'm going to try to go through this fix.

    No not really!

You should run the procedure that Halo gave to you. It sounds like you have a rogue tool installed.
