I have a USB CD/DVD-ROM attached to my Win10/64 laptop. It stopped working recently. The LED is on; when I insert a CD, the drive responds, but the drive doesn't appear in This PC. I use CDs, so I need the drive to work.

    Try the suggestions here:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...s-not-recognized-by-windows-or-other-programs

If that doesn’t work then try these steps:

    1. Open the Command Prompt with administrative privileges.

    2. Type the following command and hit Enter key:

    reg.exe add “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0” /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

    3. Exit the Command Prompt and reboot. Insert a disk to test and the optical or DVD drive should be visible now.

foogoo: I'm unwilling to follow your suggestion as I have other USB devices that I'm using. Goddess Bastet: I get error #43, which is not covered on the linked page. :(.

Does the drive show in Disk Management? If it does, right click and assign a drive letter.

    I can't find Disk Management. :(

That does not matter. As the description notes, that little program removes the "non-present" drives. These are drives that, at one time were connected to the computer, then removed, but for some reason, their connection is still registered in the Windows Registry. When that happens, it is not uncommon for those entries to block access to the drive when connected again.

Your concern seems to be losing access to the drives that are still there. That should not happen but even if it does, they should be found again next time you reboot, just as if you connected "new hardware".

So IMO, I agree with foogoo's recommendation. At the very least, try that CD drive on another computer and make sure it works there.

If it does, then I suggest disconnecting all external devices from all ports of the laptop, shutting down the laptop, unplug the charger and remove the battery for 1 minute or so. Then insert the battery, charger and boot, then start adding all your external devices, one at a time, as per the instructions of the device.

Is this the same Windows 10 laptop that the USB floppy drive didn't work on?
    https://forums.majorgeeks.com/threads/two-usb-floppy-drives-dont-work-on-two-laptops.323080/

If so, is the optical drive using the same port that the USB floppy was using? If so, you might have a bad USB port.

The first thing I'd do is change the USB port. (This person apparently has the same thought),
    https://windowsreport.com/windows-10-error-code-43-usb/

If it still isn't seen, the next thing I'd do is scan for hardware changes and see if Windows finds it.

I'm in the middle of something right now that requires two out of my three USB ports, but I will try soon to swap ports. BTW, the floppy drive on my Win10/64 laptop works now. :)

Okay. I took some time out of my work and switched ports. It didn't work. :(

    Glad to hear it.
    What was the solution?
