    Hi

Where do I start........first of all I'd like to thank anyone who can spend a bit a time sharing their knowledge with me on this one. Its a pretty common problem as I've seen on various threads, and I've taken a note of some solutions which I will try later. I'm working on another computer now as my laptop has fu@ked up, I now get the message

    Loading PBR for descriptor 2........done

    NTLDR is missing

Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart.

    -----------------------------------------
Before this happened, I was attempting to install a spyware application, which failed quoting not enough memory. I wish I had known what memory bank they were talking about, still dont know? Anyhow I was on the microsoft website, and it said this is a problem they are aware off. But I dont know which category my laptop fits in with ie. I think its PS2, but not sure. I just hope I dont have to create a boot disk, as it sounds less than straight forward, and I will hate to loose any data on my computer. I can imagine the microsoft customer service will be a nightmare merry-go-round, but I must give it a go.

Anyway enough whining, I hope this information may be useful to some fellow members out there.

After getting the initial message, I went into diagnostics on the boot device options page.

After running through initial tests, that passed, 1 fail came up, as follows...

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    Start DST Short Test

    Test Results : Fail
    Error code : 1000 - 0146
Msg : Unit 0 :DST log contains previous error.

    ------------------------------------------------

    I then pressed continue test {Y}

    Went on to.......

Boot in Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition
    press any key to continue

    Hardware Diagnostics

Main Menu, that gave 4 options,
    1.Express Test
    2. Extended test
    3. custom test
    4.tree test

I chose the express test, the following came up

    -------------------------------------------------------

    Device : IDE Disk S/N = NPOET5740YOR
    Test : Confidence Test
    Status : 30592 - 1562804 blocks
    Error Code 0F00 : 1344
Msg Block 30610 Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Which went on up from 30610 to 30639 at which stage I got tired and forecast this would go on forever, I decided not to continue the test.

The test continued in another device sector, as follows.......

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    Device IDE CDRW : CDRW/DVD SCB5265
    Test Confidence test
    Status Testing 279 - 215720 blocks

    Error

    Error Code OFOO : 131D
Msg Block 305 illegal request - possible use of incorrect media

    --------------------------------------------------------------

This error message continued from305 to 313, at which stage I assumed it would continue and therefore stopped the testing.

This may or may not help, but it sure didn't help me as there was no where to diagnose these faults.

    Information overload:confused

    Thanks again guys.

PS I have a bootable Windows XP cd, but dont have the key for it. Can this help me.

If you can boot to the CD and run the recovery mode (Press R at the prompt) then you should be able to run a chkdsk /r to fix the problem... I hope.

Dell doesn't include a CD. There is normally a partition on the hd.

If your computer runs XP, go here
    http://www.tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm

You need someone with a working computer. In step 2, you have a choice to download a floppy, a CD or a USB file.

I am trying to fix this problem on my computer, but I am trouble finding the "dos system file" folder in the first step "HPUSBFW". Is this file supposed to be on the USB Storagae device?? I am soooooo inexperienced. I am sure it is something simple...

beckylousiana, you need to start your own thread. Include the make and model of computer, what version of windows you are running and the trouble you have.

thanx, after reading through more posts, i am trying a couple of things, and hopefully will not have to post a new thread. this happened after using "Duplicate Cleaner". I guess I am not as computer savvy as I would like to believe I am...

If duplicate cleaner had you create a backup before it cleaned, restore that backup. It's better to have some files you might not need than have some you need go missing.
