    Hi,
    I recently discovered that my computer had infections, most notably my browser firefox freezes and crashes for no reason. I followed the malware removal guide "Windows XP Cleaning Procedure" in your malware removal guide, and all went smoothly until running MGtools. Here I encountered the error "NTVDM has encountered a System Error. NTVDM has encountered a System Error c0h Choose 'Close' to terminate the application"

    I clicked ignore and got an mgtools log, but I am concerned that the browser crashing problem has not been fixed. Based on other posts, I suspect that I have a Master Boot Record Infection, but I am not sure and don't know how to correct it. What do you recommend
    ps- windows built-in firewall was active when running scans; if this was problem let me know. All other programs were disabled.

    Please download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe by noahdfear and save it to your Desktop.

    • Double click HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe to run the tool.
    • When the tool completes it will inform you HelpAssistant was successfully removed, or it may require a reboot. DO NOT reboot at this point if it tells you this. Do the below first.
    • With Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\MGtools folder and double click on mbrfix.bat ( If not sure how to use Windows Explorer, you can optionally click Start > Run and enter C:\MGtools\mbrfix.bat into the run box and click OK. ) This will run quickly flashing a black screen in front of you too fast to read.
    • NOW REBOOT!
    After reboot run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    I followed your instructions. Here is the new MGtools log. When I reached the point where running mbrfix.bat, I still encountered the error: "NTVDM has encountered a System Error. NTVDM has encountered a System Error c0h Choose 'Close' to terminate the application". I discovered after following the procedure that superantispyware was running in background, hope this didn't mess things up. Also Windows Update installed new updates during reboot. I have used Firefox browser for ten minutes moving across internet, and past problem of browser crashing seems to be gone. Please advise whether problem is fixed. Is there anything I can/should do to fix the NTVDM errors? Also, would you advise running the "deep cleaning" procedure at this site a second time?

    Do you have your XP CD?

    Let's try doing this while Kes is at work.

    Try downloading this:
    XP Fix.

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    If you don't have your xp cd:
    GMER's MBR.exe

    • Double click on the MBR.exe file to run it.
    • A log will be produced & saved to the desktop, called MBR.log.
    • Rename this log. Attach this log to your next message.

    Then run the below instructions.
    Click Start > Run and copy & paste the following text in the code box into the Run box and then click OK. You must copy and paste or type in this exactly. The quotes must be exactly as shown and there is a space before the -f
    Code:

         "%userprofile%\desktop\mbr.exe" -f

    Now double click on the mbr.exe file and attach the new mbr.log

    If you have your xp cd, then do this:
    You will need to boot to the Recovery Console that you have installed (perhaps when you installed ComboFix) to remove this infection.

    Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

    You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

    Then boot back into normal mode.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thank you so much for all of your help TimW and Kestrel13!

    I followed the instructions, and when running MGTools\GetLogs.bat I no longer had any error messages! I have attached the Avenger.txt and MGlogs.zip files. Am I free and clear?

    On the cleaning procedures thread, it was recommended to toggle system restore. During earlier cleaning, a trojan was also found in a scan. Should I do this?

    Thanks again!!!!

    Let's just do a little more cleaning.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\zip.exe
    C:\cleanup.bat
    C:\cleanup.exe

    Folder::
    C:\Avenger

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    I appreciate your help! I ran the programs as you instructed. Then I dragged the text file into combo fix, it opened, updated, then ran, then restarted the computer, then created the log I have attached. I have also attached the mgtools zip.

    Ready to do anything else it takes to make this system clean.

    When we have finished, do you recommend toggle system restore. During the initial cleaning, a trojan was also found in a scan.

    You have saved me so much hassle! Thanks!!!

    Did you include all the script? Combo did not remove the C:\Avenger folder which is full of all the files we removed. You can delete that now. You also need to disable the HelpAssistant account.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thank you! Everything seems to be running perfectly now!! You've saved my computer. :)
