I have a password for my xp profile that is all numbers. A couple days ago, I had to restart Windows removing everything at the direction of a Dell rep. Anyway, before this was done, I could switch users and type my password in rapidly, and bing, I was in. Now, everytime I switch (logging out of another profile), the num lock is off. As this did not occur before, there must be a way to have num lock stay on all the time. Any ideas appreciated!

Is this ok to do if I am using Win XP Media Edition? Where is the Startup path it refers for me to place the script?

not sure If I am going to the right place. I go in Win Explorer to c/documents and settings/all users. The closest thing I see to Startup is Start menu.

    Hi wmarkj,

The script fix is for users after log on.

This is the fix you need, to set num lock for log ons.

    1. Run Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
    2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
    3. Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2.

If you can't find/do it, we can explain further.
    Bad out.

    APPLIES TO
    • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition

The only real functional difference between Media Center Edition and XP Pro is domain support

Is this what you are trying to find?
Running the Script from the Startup Folder
To configure the script to run locally, copy the Numlock.vbs file to the user's Startup folder, which is normally found in the user's profile path.

To configure the script to run for all users, copy the Numlock.vbs file to the Startup folder in the All Users profile. The default path for this folder is Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.

    Toni_1947,
The script fix is for after logon.
I posted above the registry fix that wmarkj needs for what was asked.
    Bad out.

    Hi again,
Read further down the page,at MS.
    I copied this from there.
The at logon refers to each user or all users once they log on as their profile is loaded.

If you want to enable the NUM LOCK key to be turned on for use before the user presses CTRL+ALT+DEL to log on, use Registry Editor to change the default behavior. For information about how to do this, refer to the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
154529 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154529/) How to Enable the NUM LOCK Key for the Logon Screen

    Bad out.

    Hi again,

The first link you posted goes to the page with the script stuff.
    Hence the confusion.
wmarkj is trying the scrript thing and that is not the fix.
So that this doesn't get any more confusing.
We are agreed that wmarkj should do the regedit and not the script thing?

    Peace.

    Hi wmarkj,
Start > Run enter "regedit" no quotes to open registry editor.

    Drill down to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2.

To change the value right click on the key InitialKeyboardIndicators and choose Modify.
In the window that opens change the value.
    then OK and close.
Let us know how it goes.

    Bad out.
