When playing any sort of full-motion video, be it .mpg, .wmv, .avi, .mov whatever, my CPU load cranks up to 100% and my system slows down to a halt, and there's no way out of it but to reboot. Games work fine. Everything else works fine, in fact. And this is with all players, not just WMP. I hear it's a problem with Nvidia's recent drivers, but even when I roll back to 71.89 or 71.84, drivers supposedly without this problem, it persists. Anyone got a line on a possible fix for this? All drivers and codecs are up to date, AdAware scan, virus scan, Nortons scans, all done, no problems.

The more I read about stories like yours the less I like nvidia.
I have a crappy FX-5200 and I get a lot of blue screens if I use
    Windows Media player 9
I wind up having to use media player classic from
Real Player alternative and Quicktime alternative to avoid
the blue screens. And it was twice as bad when I was running
    service pack 2!
I've probably had a half dozen different nvidia drivers at one
point or other, and none of them helped.
Fortunately for me, media player classic works pretty well.

Reinstalling an older driver wont completely remove some of the components of the newer driver, you need to run a driver cleaning utility, this is the best, follow the instruct6ions in the readme to the letter or it wont work, then reinstall the driver of your choice

Yeah, that occurred to me. I'll give it a try and let you know. Thanks a lot!

both your problem and ComputerGate's problem sound a LOT more like video codec and spyware/dirty computer problems than they do like Driver issues.

I could be wrong, but how clean are your systems? Do you have a good antivirus? run spyware/adware cleaners regularly (like Ad-Aware and Spybot)?

also, as Rikky said, you should run Driver Cleaner when installing new drivers to thouroughly remove the old ones.

Well, that's the point. I replaced all of my codecs and I've run multiple adware/spyware scans and virus scans since this problem started. Plus, I just uninstalled my driver, run Detonator RIP and Driver Cleaner Pro, and reinstalled, and the problem is still there.

few ideas just tick them off :) Is your copy of windows up to date, have you checked the the event viewer for any clues, have you updated your chipset drivers,I know it does the same with all players but try lowering the performance slider in WMP to halfway.

you could also rule out any corrupted windows files by inserting your win xp home disk go to run and type sfc /scannow then OK it will repair the xp files but wont effect your service packs or hotfixes,a long shot but worth a try
