Agreed. Actually removing Spybot, I think it has dropped down the list of better programs over the years. Doing some more changes, anyone has any favorites missing let me know, will be working on it all day on and off.

For the XP users, UltimateDefrag would make a nice choice.
Does a very good job on my XP machine.

    Additions,

MSE (with a powerful PC, it's ok to use alongside Avast!)
Puran Defrag (good for diskchecking and boottime defrag too)
    TDSSkiller
VLC (afaik, the only player that can play DVD's without needing a codec on the PC already)
GOM (afaik, the only media player that can play broken/partial files)
IOBit Toolbox (includes a good memory manager in SmartRAM) portable
WSCC (great updater/container for Sysinternals and Nirsoft troubleshooting utilities - but beware FP's when downloading full Nirsoft package)
SteadyState (Grab it while you can, Genuine Windows only, Vista and XP)
    CCleaner Enhancer
Classic Shell (improves W7's Explorer for lovers of the old-style Explorer)
    Pale Moon (light-weight Firefox)
K-Meleon (very fast lightweight Mozilla-based browser)

I'd keep Spybot, if only for it's Immunisation feature, the Advanced tools are also very useful.

  6. Caliban

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Couple for the miscellaneous files: Agent Ransack and Convert - been using both for years, never a problem with either of them.

  7. BoredOutOfMyMind

    BoredOutOfMyMind Picabo, ICU

Tomahawk PDF+ is Freeware only for a Non Profit.

I recommend CutePDF as it is free for Personal or Business use.

FreeFileSync is a good backup program - portable too. I back up my files to a portable hard drive with it. One thing though, if you're running Outlook and have .pst files opened, it'll flag these. I mark not to backup at that point. Once I close Outlook then, I'll run it again to back up the .pst files.

MA, a couple of emails sent to you today.

First one lists alphabetically all those programs currently in the 15th September listing of:

    Must have Free downloads at
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20

Second email are programs already in MG but maybe included in the Free downloads and/or some programs for your consideration to be added to MG, and into FREE in due course.

Both have Excel spreadsheets attached, to make it easier for you, I hope. ;)

Software Link Suggestion on MG front page

I was wondering, since there are quite a few apps at MG that have a portable version, like CCLeaner, or are "portable" can there be a new Section called "Portable" with links to these programs? I know you can do a search in MG on "portable" and results would show |MG| program-name Portable version Download. Just figured why not a true section for these?

Not sure where most people visit for suggestions like this for visibility, if it should be in Software (where it's appropriate) or here in the Lounge. No problem if this gets moved. :)

Bazza, went through them, dont't agree many of them belong in top downloads. Good, sure, must have, nah. But as you saw I did add in some and new on front page. Lot of time into it...

Re: Software Link Suggestion on MG front page

Because my thought is to replace any program that has a portable app with that. No registry entries, no mess, it's the way to go. Just have not pulled the trigger on the idea yet.

Also breaking larger sections into categories. For example, I just broke Multimedia into 3 categories. You will see this also in backup and mail. Allows us to make this list bigger, as it needs to be.

    Also added:
Find tools to Manage or remove installed software

Thats it for now, maybe some more Sunday, but plan to finish up this week. Went through Satrows post and skimmed others. So many we don't have listed here, I think after this I wil start a new thread for programs we are missing. So look again, if your favorite program is missing or anything obvious, let me know!

Hello again, I like that idea,
    Now, how about these?

    Sandboxie

    AVG Free Edition

    PC Tools Firewall Plus

    Windows Error Messages

All have been very good, and no complaints. ;)

    Multimedia: Nice!;)

All you listed are in the list. Might not be where you expect them however :)

Sandboxie is under Scan & protect my computer for Malware - Malicious software (might not be best spot for it?)
AVG is under Protect my computer from viruses
PC Tools Firewall is under Protect my computer with a firewall
Windows Error Messages is under Monitor or run diagnostics to find a problem.

  24. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

That works, just as long as they are there!;) I just don't want to see them go. :)

OK, maybe move Sandboxie to Protect my computer from viruses, along side of AVG?

Maybe add one of the Easeus backup apps? I see a lot of people recommending it (is it this ?) over the built-in backup in W7 as being easier and having better features for faster recovery.

I started testing out the newly added Privatefirewall a day or two ago, looking good so far :), not too 'noisy' but not so quiet you can forget it's there.

Not sure if using this thread is the best way in recommending a program to be listed here, but I ran into a program that fits my needs at work ....X-Mouse Button Control...(can be used as portable software). I searched MG and didn't come across it:

    http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm

My computer had an additional mouse driver installed so that I could re-assign mouse keys. However, I was running into other problems, and the hard drive was re-imaged (IT policy at work) and I no longer can use the mouse driver to re-configure the mouse keys. Came across this program from a site that deals only with portable software and thought I share it with y'all. Pretty cool on what all it can do. It has been given quite a few awards from other sites.

If there's standard method (thread or email) of recommending programs, my apoligies by using this particular thread.
