O.M.F.G.... Inconceivable...

Today, I decided to do a little maintenance on my brother's computer. He's pretty much totally computer illiterate when it comes to the upkeep of his machine. First I cleaned his internet cache and cookies... all that... 168 MB worth...

But that's not the real shocker... I want you guys to look at this, because I've never seen so much spyware in all my life. Unbelievable...

Not only have I never seen so much malware in one place, but I hope I never see so much in one place (especially MY place) again!

Well... to pass on the warning... I noticed a lot of it came from Comet Cursors, which is some goofy web site he went to for a custom mouse cursor. I suggest against going there... heheheh.

I also ran an anti-trojan program... I guess it considered some of the things he had installed as trojans... 3 files to be exact. But I guess that's to be expected, since no one in this whole house even knows what trojans or spyware is besides me! And he's never done anything to maintain his computer since he got it. I go in every once in a while ta check things out... and I expected to find some but Jesus man...

I installed ad-aware on a friends family computer that had been running for a number of years... and the first run got OVER 1100 articles of ad/spyware found

in addition (this was a while back before they started catching similar things) Spybot caught an ADDITIONAL 300.

needless to say, that computer had a laregely noticeable increase in performance.... i almost felt like charging them

 

heheheheh... no pron... but you might find a little on mine!

Spybot caught an additional 300, huh? Maybe I should download that and give it another once-over. While I'm at it, better check mine too.

 

the two have gotten a lot better at catching the same thing, so you most likely wont find as many additional with spybot... but its always good to run in case

 

I interned with a PC maintenance firm. We routinely got PCs with 400+ problems.

And 200+ WinDoctor problems.

 

T-Rex......Your brother probrably didn't even KNOW what spyware was. But 'cmon, that's part of the fun. Most of the time it's the same old thing, with non-geeks. They ask us to "take a look at" their computer. It's usually not until it's almost ground itself to a halt. We see the temp folders loaded, defrag not done for 480 days, your usual 20 things in the startup folder, a handful of dialers, and a few token viruses. And we scan, delete, scan, delete some more, defrag, and we're heroes !!!
Then we get beer. LOL

that's nothing, Had a customer brinng one in that maxed out Adaware with 804 Pieces. We keep it written on the dry erase board in ther service area, the previous record holder was 749.

I ran that on my uncles machine, found over 400 items

I also got a free PC for building one for a friends gf's parents, and ran it on there, over 500 items

No wonder it ran slow

mate of mine ran it and got 500 objects, cleaned them all, BUT get this, the NEXT DAY he ran it again and got another 400!!!! i promise you that he cleaned them all of the first time!
