Occasional failure printing

PC: Dell 280
Printer: HP Laserjet 1022n
OS: XP Pro

When trying to print to networked 1022n, MOST of the time printing is fine. However, on some occasions you click 'File -> Print', the print dialog box pops up, you click OK and nothing happens. Tried this in both MS OUtlook and in Excel. Tried reinstall of driver. Also test prints go ok to other printers on the network, but I didn't try 10 or 12 print jobs to wait and see if it failed (I'm trying not to kill any more trees than I can help). Called HP tech support, and they blame network traffic. However, we are running with fiber and I highly doubt this to be the solution. I may need to look at reinstall of MS Office unless I can find another alternative, but I need to look at this as last resort.
I just wanted to see if anyone out there has had this problem before, and how it got resolved.
