Hi everyone, i bought an amd x2 5000 black edition.....and will be planning to OC it at some point, have a few questions... :)

ok, unlocked multiplier...obviosly is a key part so thats what i got lol a bang for buck cpu, but i have seen threads ..not actually read them but seen the topic "brisbane faults..." or such, but i havnt seen any yet....
I bought a low end mobo, which is one thing that will get in my way but it has enough to simply oc the cpu so its ok at the moment ASrockALIVEnf6G - vsta , also i just have almost stock cooling...apart from the fact the cpu was PIB lol!! i have some low end HS/fan and i didnt even use any other compound other than the stuff allready on the cpu which is bad also....also im waiting for my new case to arrive.. so thats why i didnt get any other parts yet i need to know they can go in the case i bought which is a Coolermaster elite340

But i changed the frequency in the bios,... im sorry i forgot the real term for it.... i changed the ocing to Async not sync, because it nudges the pcie speed up and my Gcard just cant take it... anyhow i took it from 200 to around 220... or somewhere up there and had the cores going at just under 3000mhz, *i did it slowly...didnt just put it right up* and Everest tld me the combined cpu temp was 60 ...or a little over, anyhow all was stable but i took it back down because there is a lot of heat in this case, the cpu ...or maybe the NB is making a hell of a lot of heat.... everest told me the GPU temp was 64c .....that worried me

What sort of cooling would be good for ..medium lvl OCing? i dont want to throttle it, but havingit run at a stable 2900 per core and temps lower would be nice!
how do you set a fan to the NB?
Or do i just get a new mobo!!

Well, 5000+ BE can be overclocked to 3ghz on stock cooling. You don't need anything fancy. If you want to buy a cooler, look at Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro.

The FSB in AMD is called HTT in Mhz. 200-ish is safe. Just up the multiplier to x15-16. Might need a notch up in cpu voltage.

    Post your specs.

hi lol , il look at that fan... the specs of this at the moment are...

    CPU - amd x2 5000+be
    RAM - 2gb duel channel ddr2 - 800mhz unbranded
    MOBO - ASrockALIVEnf6G
PSU - 550 w duel fan low end - with sata ect
GCARD - nvidia 7300gs - branded but thats not important
    HD - 250 gb sata 2 maxtor....8mb cache - cheap option
OPTICAL DRIVE - old NEC ide dvdrw 16x

the case im still waiting for, lol, the ram il change to some ocz gold...it was cheap and cheerfull, i will be getting a new gcard also but nothing top of the line., and a fast hard disk .... but not till i have my new case :) ... im scratching a system together and just trying to use at least branded things lol , 1st "decent" pc ever! and to be truthfull im happy with it as it is..but will notice the upgrades :)

"PCI Express Frequency – Set this to 100 MHz. If you don’t, I believe the PCIe bus speed will increase proportionally with your FSB which is something you DON’T want to do to your expensive video board.

PCI Clock Synchronization - Use 33.33 MHz here. Again, if you leave the setting on auto, the PCI clock will creep up proportionally with your FSB which can damage cards you may have there aren't designed to run at higher frequencies."

    http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=71656

You DO NOT WANT to mess with PCI-e Frequency unless you want to damage your Graphics Card for no noticeable difference! Lock the PCI-e frequency (dont tie it to your CPU Freq). You can overclock the GPU later within the OS but you don't want it tied to your FSB or you may and will do damage. Please read some guides or you will get that magic puff of smoke!

thanks lol... yeah ..i will admit the 1st time i tried to oc anything i had them tied, so it raised the pci-e to 101 or 102 and it didnt even boot lol, just an instant "nope" !

i now have my new case....the coolermaster elite 340 , its not bad, but all my cables look horrible, ive had to loop some round here, tucked a load into the 3 inch drive bay i dont use!! and generally the insides quite messy, time for some cable ties, or maybe just some new cables!! i would put a pic up on here ....but everyone would laugh lol!!

also i fitted my 2 old 92mm fans..front and rear of case, untill i buy the new 120mm ones, and it seems to have helped my temps slightly , and all i need now is a nice little fan for the NB and all the other bits in time and its all go!

but im happy still, its all improvements!!

oh , on the case side where the vent is for the cpu..... under that vent is a rectangle vent, i wonder what it is for?

sorry i had to post again to make clear some points! and add pics if poss

i have the whole machine running at stock totally non overclocked ad in my new case this is the temps as reported by everest and the cpu / ram details from cpuz - cpuid

these screenies were "idle" well the pc has been on for a good 2 hours but dong nothing much .... although i do use BOINC on my pc, maybe it keeps it warm at night lol :)

the everest boxs at the bottom go in this order...

Voltage;cpu core , chassis fan spd , CPU fan speed , GPU temp , CPU core2 temp , CPU core 1 temp , TEMP CPU , MOTHERBOARD temp ...

    http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a285/spikey666/Image1.jpg

    http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a285/spikey666/Image2.jpg

this is usng 2 cheap 92mm fans.....for the case and also a cheap hs and fan on cpu using the thermal compound on the cpu!! ..like i said before when i buy new HS/fan ect il use some good stuff....

what is the border line temp for this cpu? when the temp hits ...what, is when i become concerned? lol :)

also the RAM ...261mhz x2 = 520 ...#???? its 800mhz ram , im not sure if these reported speeds are "top" speed ie spec or just what it is running at, and looking at the number 261.... that looks more like its running at that, wait is thart 533??? so my ram atm is only running at 533mhz?

i never read that really good post/sticky on ocing but i have it open on the other tab i think im going to go and digest it , i know some things ...but theres a lot i dont know lol....
damn that old barton core i had , thats why im here because i got one...and accidentally oc'd it with sucess and that cpu ripped shreds into my old K8 sempron.... and it was k7 lol!

It's not as easy to bring ram up to specs for AMD. It's been like that since socket 939. You just have to worry about HTT. Try x14, x15, x16 multiplier. Your mobo might need a bios update for higher mulitpliers.

Get speedfan instead. I can't tell which one is your cpu temp.

Well, anyone can o/c 5000+ BE to 3ghz with the right board. Your board may be limiting you.

cpu temp is the dark red one - 51c ...the purple 1 is 2nd core the next red one is 1st core ...both atm are at 38 ...

    Use this guide for Temps:

    Processor Electrical Specifications

The side rectangle can often support 2 x 80mm fans (as inlet for Video/PCI cards) but I would definitely sticky tape some stocking or fine mesh over it if you put fans there, otherwise it will just dump dust inside your case.

Your RAM is underclocking to match your FSB (which can be better than OC RAM causing more heat, my RAM is currently underclocked). If you wanted to you should actually lower your Multiplier and increase your FSB to get your RAM up but once again this will increase temps and DON'T DO THIS UNTIL you have read at least 2-3 guides and improved cooling.

right thanks again, lol i knew something was wrong.... i have changed the ram back to 400 ...and very slightly oc'd the cpu...but al;lways watching temps, all is stable, but im going to encode something....heavy and watch all my temps....

and im going to go and chew on a lot of the sticky guides...

but be prepared for lots of questions everyone lol!

also the gcard measurement of temp i imagine is actually taken from the north bridge chipset? and now remembering a review on my mobo they said the NB gets hot on these mobos is its worst downfall... so il invest in a little fan for it i think :)

72 c is danger level for my cpu, holy cow....right...so high 60's is a bad place...i see i see

Your GPU (Video Card) will and should have it's own "independent" temp sensor chips/units, it should not be associated/correlated with your NB that will more likely be a Motherboard heat sensor. They will show around 45C for idle and upto 90C for load, whereas CPU you really want to aim for something like 30C idle and 65C load tops (for myself that is others don't mind going higher, but they have a good idea of what their doing!).

ok lol, i am a little worried now, my idle temps are 50 - 55c and thats is totally non OC'd .... i have a little tube of compound but its not the best....my freind (real life) reccomended "arctic silver" ? il have a look around ... bt all i can see as a consumer is prices and sales jargon, for me price = quality...but thats not allways so lol

i could almost make a cup of tea from this one lol

    wow, thank you !

arctic silver 5..... and the ceramic based? I will hunt for a UK vendor of these, and now i finalltyhave my new case i know the space i have to work in, and i have enough room for a pretty big HS/fan , and i will be buying the other cooling bits... lol its funny ATM, having these cheap 92mm fans in this decent case, and a white dvd IDE drive!! but its almost complete, i saw some thermaltake fans.... http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=HFT-A1928

LOL i dont need lights on my fans, but, these are exactly the same as their red and blue ones, and 4 pin..... so i should be able to alter the speeds in the bios

But i noticed something on my cheap ish mobo ...the chassis fan pins..there is 3 only ...

maybe i should just get a new mobo but...thing is i wanted mATX..and thats what i have, and mATX isnt known for its wealth of things like this is it...maybe i could get a fan controller? 5 1/4 bay thingy?

oh i must again thank you Mr.Eagle..... been a great help here, like i stated to start, im not a nub in the general pc components , but cooling i am very newb, because all the machines i had before didnt need cooling... the last one was a sempron skt 754 , that thing was running at 44 c tops lol

Well even on my ASUS P5WDH (not cheap) all of the fan sockets are 3 pins but you can get these if you want the motherboard to control them:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189119

    That should do the job.

With that artic silver please make sure you goto their website and follow the application advice (you only need a very small amount).

    ok...

    all done.....

    result....

very good this pic is semi idle no full load.... full load i see 55 ...thats playing an mmorpg and runing BOING - rosetta @ home, i couldnt be happier thanks!
the cpu temp is highlighted ... it must be combined temp or all over temp as it has the ones for the cores...

    http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a285/spikey666/cputemp.jpg

**the 50 is cpu temp.... 7x is the g card **

this is with 2x hiper flow 120mm fans *not controlled so gong 1400rpm* and the arctic cooling freezer pro 64 and arctic silver 5

i couldnt BE any happier....mmm no wait i want a new psu g card and ram!! but thats just comps for you lol most of the fun!

Well done they look quite good temps. You may find that the 50C is your IHS but the next 2 figures, 32 & 36 are your Core Temps not really sure, but there nice load temps.

heya! yep ATM ...im on 46 c core 2 and 41c core 1 and it says CPU temp 55 ...thats why i just guessed... the temp gauges i imagine are on the underside of the metal plate covering the die? so the 50 may be the temp of the plate...and the 2 seperate readings are the dies themselves?

please excuse my lack of technical vocab

    GPU - 55
    AUX - 52
    MCP - 74 - WTH?
    CPU#1 / core#2 - 45
    CPU#1 / core#1 - 40
    CPU - 54
    MOTHERBOARD - 42

i still havnt learnt what MCP is.... or il be true looke to find out lol, but 74 looks a bit harsh ... i hope its the NB lol then i have an excuse to buy another little fan haha ...uh dyson syndrome, but anyhow yeah....up there on my last post i mistook the MCP temp for the GPU.... the gpu wsnt on 70+ :)
