Odd CDROM problem

Finally got my new HD to boot XP after re-running Data Lifeguard 11 program. Now an old problem has resurfaced that I've never heard of happening.
After installing a Memorex CD-RW about 1.5 years ago, my OEM CDROM stopped working. It will take eject commands from the desktop and opens/closes, but will not read CD's. It reads as an empty drive with CD's inserted. It checks OK under Properties. I've also checked for new drivers and can't find one.
Weird thing is that if I put the CD drives on the Primary IDE channel, they both work. It's just on the secondary that the OEM one doesn't seem to work. Two HDD's will work on the secondary channel though (I had put the HDD there last year when installing the CD-RW thinking that the CDROM wasn't working because the cables were on the wrong channels).
The Memorex drive is selected as the master drive.
CPU is an AMD K6 and OS is XP.

Ummm... you did re-jumper the OEM CD-ROM drive as "slave" when it was the secondary drive on the secondary channel, didn't you?

And what hard drive settings are you using in the BIOS for the CD drives? "Auto" doesn't always work the way one would like -- sometimes you have to be more specific, especially on older machines.

 

Yeah, old one is jumpered as slave & labeled as such in Disk Manager.
I'm a newbie at this stuff so don't know much about BIOS. I just checked it and here are some of the current settings:
IDE drive translation: Enable (had changed itself to Disable and I just changed it back)
Enhanced IDE transfer: Enable
Untra 33/66: Enable
Pri IDE Controller: Enable
Secondary IDE Controller: Enable

Let me know if these settings or others can be changed to troubleshoot.
