Odd message on my Dell

I recently rehabbed a Dell Dimension 3000 DT with fresh load of XP Home Sp3, it has been fully patched and running perfect! Yesterday when I fired it up I need to hit the button about 3-4 times then I got a message that it shut down due to a Thermal Event, I know that did not happen as I shut it down normally after only a few minutes the day before. I got it started up and ran SIW to check temps but the board only displays HD temps which after about 45 minutes was 85 degrees. I took a look in the event viewer, I had a couple of Dhcp and user 32 event 1073 only in system. Today again I had to hit the button several times to get it up and going and got the same Thermal Event message, hit F1 it booted up fine and running fine. I did a search on User 32 1073 which related to power options none of which I am using. Any hints as where to look is always greatly appreciated!

P.S. Any chance a CMOS battery could cause this?

I also did a drive clone from this drive to another using Segates Disk Wizard tool on May 20, not sure if that would have any bearing and it did run just fine for three days after wards. I will pull that off with Revo as it was the only added item since the build!

If your hard drive reached 85 degrees centigrade then I am not surprised that you had a thermal event shutdown. Your computer must be like an oven!

Try using speedfan to monitor temps.

Sorry I did not say 85F, the box is squeaky clean. I did uninstall Segates Disk Wizard, I rebooted three times after wards all seemed Ok. I had errands so I just now tried it and had the same issue. Could the MBR be screwed up from when I did the cloning? I still feel it may be related to SDW!

One more question! The processor was not disturbed when I cleaned the case and board, what else would trigger a thermal event?

A thermal event is triggered by the motherboard, not the OS so the boot sector would have nothing to do with it. If you have a damaged temperature sensor then this may be the cause, for which the only solution is a replacement motherboard unless you happen to have a thermal soldering machine and some 1/4MM solder lying around?

Just installed the new board, I am still having the same issue. I think it narrows it down to PSU, I hit the button it starts for about 3-4 seconds and shuts off as it goes through the boot menu screen or just says black and shuts down. Mr. Collins what are your thoughts!

I should add that the fans are running and the MB board LED is lit.

I would recommend trying a replacement PSU. A normal ATX sized one can be used as a test as long as the case of the PSU touches a metal part of the computer case to earth it.

Question when did Dell stop using the odd wiring sequence, I know they did but when? I have had several Dell's and had to use their PSU or use the adapter to switch the wiring to industry standard. Want to make sure this one uses the standard wiring.

Picked up an Antec 350, I get the board light but no beeps and no video. Now I am sure the PSU blew the first and second board!!! Good thing there are some cheap ones around, another is on its way. I am hoping the drives did not get whacked also, I do have plenty of IDE's kicking around will know in a few days.
