I have a client that says when she turns on her laptop, it comes on for a second and a green light blinks on the keyboard, but then the laptop turns off. She said the first time she tried booting it she got a screen that said something about a virus. Would a bootable XP CD work? I told her I had not experience at this, and I am mainly a networker. What do you guys think?

P.S. My name is Adam, and I am the FNG

A bootable Windows XP CD will only allow you to repair or reinstall Windows. And this will not do you much good if the PC will not remain on. But this problem does not sound like a virus. If the PC does not even power on to a point long enough to for Windows to start to load, a typical virus/trojan cannot be doing anything. A boot sector virus could run as soon as the hard disk is accessed but that takes more than a few seconds too. You can read this to understand more about Boot Sector Viruses: http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahll.html

The problem sounds more like a hardware issue. Possibly a bad power supply/charger or battery pack. But that is just a guess.

    Thanks for the reply,
She said that she has 3 separate batteries and tried all of them, but who knows. I wasn't there, and havn't seen it myself, but she says nothing appears on the screen.

    Anyone else?

Yeah but are the charged properly. What if the charger is defective and her batteries are not getting charged.

If you need more help with this issue, you will have to get more info. When you do, you should probably post in the Hardware Forum, unless you can really justify that this is a malware problem. From what I have heard thus far, I doubt it is a malware problem.
