I came back home and found the icons missing from my Office 2000 docs on my desktop. And I cant open any of my pictures with the default Photo Gallery Viewer. And now I have a Windows 2010 installed without my permission. My windows updates download automatically but I choose when and if to install them. I haven't installed updates since 2/6/12, but when I look at my Add/Remove programs & updates, I have like 18 WIndows XP Hotfix updates installed as of today 2/29/12 ...I DID NOT INSTALL ANY OF THIS and all my restore point are gone......whats happening?????

    thank you for ANY help

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything. Note if you cannot save things in C:\ then just save them to your Desktop. Make sure that you have disable UAC and rebooted first if you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I got as far running Mbam, it said that it found 1 trojan. And removed it. I restarted my computer and now its Blue Screen of death. It will not start in Safe Mode , or any other mode. System restore has no restore points and when open up Command Prompt it starts with a drive X: (thats bad right?)

Also i failed to mention that my computer is about a year old and is running on and has only ever been run with Window 7 ....All those updates are Windows Xp.....
I also had about 30 New Programs Installed on my Add/Remove programs list, all with yesterdays date....things that I didnt install myself.....and they are very old programs like musicmatch, fruity loops, and a bunch of other stuff that I used to have on an OLD computer.....but never on this current computer.

At this point Im thinking of just reinstalling windows to factory status, Ive done this before when the computer failed to start. Last time I opened up my computer, removed the hardrive and extracted the data to my laptop.

I want to do this again , but I dont want to infect my laptop either. Is there anything I can do to make my laptop impervious to this infection?? Or make a quarantine environment for the extracted data?

Also i had about 6 external harddrives connected to the infected computer...do I assume that they are now infected? What do I do about them?

Sorry for the massive message, but thank you for your time

Not knowing what the cause of your issues is makes it difficult to pose a response. If you wish to try grabbing your data off the hard drive using your laptop, make sure it is fully protected and all definitions are up to date. You should also probably install AutoEater.
