while cleaning out a load of junk getting ready to move house i have come across 2 disks for Office Pro 2007 Academic but do not have any of the original packaging so no serial numbers, the disks are genuine original and the key for my Office pro home will not work (obviously i can be silly and try) is there any way i can get a key for these (no illegal methods please) there is a part number on the disks would this be enough if i contacted Microsoft i do not need this program but am curios to see what is different from my Office version.

Office 2007 Pro Academic/Education has these apps

    Word 2007
    Excel 2007
    PowerPoint 2007
    Publisher 2007
    Access 2007
Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager

as for the KEY, then yes do contact MSFT and with you having the part numbers on original CDs then you never know, Bill.

Back in 2004, a replacement XP key cost 10 dollars USD.

Good luck. At the very least, they will want a sales receipt to prove ownership.

Well i have spent the whole day e-mailing and telephoning variouse MS help centers and keep coming up against a brick wall namely that i do not have a product ID number and no matter how many times i explain that the PC was re-formated they always give the same answer no ID no help or they ask for a paid voucher number.

surely i can not be the only person in the world with genuine MS product but no way to install it????

i think i will go lie down in a dark room and contemplate my dilemma.

    Hi Bill,

The "part number" on the disks is actually useless to this situation; because all of the Office Pro 2007 Academic disks and their part numbers are exactly identical. Unfortunately, there is very little Microsoft will do for you without the original authentic Product Key - because that is what proves the Microsoft product is "genuine."

Also even if you had kept a sales receipt for the Office Pro 2007 Academic product; Microsoft would likely not issue you a brand new Product Key; simply because you claim that you lost or cannot locate the old one.

If they allowed this to happen, users could simply buy the software as "new" and then later on resell the software + key online as "used" keep the original sales receipt and obtain another set of disks (from say, craigslist or eBay) and then call Microsoft claiming they lost the original packaging + product key and now want MS to issue another authentic product key.

    Good Luck!

    Hi COMPUABLE
thanks for the input and i fully understand what you are saying i know MS are paranoid about bootlegging their software and feel that they have a right to the royalties for there products it's just that surely they could devise a formula for situations such as this?
i spent a whole day trying to find a way round it i even phoned my local PC shop who know me well and their answer was that MS say you need to buy another copy and to be honest he offered me product ID to try, i declined on the ground that i have Office Home on my computer now and would like to do it the correct way it's just that MS make it so difficult.

    so i remain deeply frustrated.

Oh, anytime... my pleasure, really! I just wish that there was something more I could do for you regarding this dilemma. And yes, I agree and wish there was some way around this situation w/Microsoft.

On a somewhat positive note, one thing's for certain here: If you have learned anything from this situation - it would be to ALWAYS make sure to immediately type or write down the product numbers (as well as the order number; on the receipt of the company that you originally bought it from) after buying any shareware software programs including any new operating systems.

You should definitely do this with ANY and ALL shareware products that you obtain, especially when you buy them new. And then save them all someplace on a separate document; either on a document on your computer (encrypted, of course) or keep this invaluable info in an organized notebook or both. You could also use a freeware program called "Access Manager 2" to keep this information on.

I do this like clockwork; before even installing the software onto my computer, because I learned the hard way that this is really the best way to keep track of this valuable information. One time I was selling a practically new computer due to the fact that a relative had just bought me a newer, much better one for Christmas. As it turned out, when I went to reinstall the OEM Windows XP the Product Key identification tag on the side of the computer (that I was going to sell) turned out to be scratched, torn and faded and was therefore unreadable.

Unfortunately I was in a hurry and prior to attempting the fresh reinstall; and decided to use something like Boot Nuke - instead of attempting the usual reformat and reinstall. Therefore the drive was erased before I had a chance to snag the product numbers by using something like Belarc Advisor before reinstalling XP.

And to top it all off this incident happened at the worst possible time - around the time when Win XP was originally released; when even an eBay bought copy went for hundreds of dollars back then. My machine went from a fairly valuable ‘used’ computer to a useless doorstop in a heartbeat.

    Good Luck!
