I have a question for you mg guru's

I have a client, who is running windows 7 and is connected to a domain.

When she saves a file, it only save's locally, and not on a shared drive on the server. Thereby , not allowing access to other users, until she forcefully sync's the file. Essentially, it is not syncing automatically.
The sync is almost essiantly working backwords, and not keeping any offline files on her pc.
I would appreciate any help on the matter.

    hey Slider68,

in what directory are these files being saved locally on the computer?

also, reply with the exact steps that she takes when she accesses a file that is designated as an offline file.

has this problem always occurred or is it just a recent issue?

    Thanks for the reply techsent.
The file is located on her desktop I do believe (i have to go onsite, to confirm this again). It is a shared file on a server, and just a shortcut to her desktop.
She opens the file, makes changes, and it only saves locally.
If she force's the sync, it will sync the file to the network drive, but not automatically.
    Problem has always occured.

    Re: Offline Files Sync

    hey Slider68,

you may want to try this approach instead.

*test this implementation in your domain test lab before rolling it out in the production domain environment.

    1. on the server, create a shared folder. During the creation, click the Caching button and select the all files and programs... option.
    2. add files into the shared folder that should be available when users are working offline (aka, when users are not connected to the domain network).
    3. next, use a login script and map a network drive for users that will be needing access to these files.

*when the users login to the domain, they can access the files through the mapped drive displayed in My Computer.

When the users save changes to the files in that mapped drive, the files will update immediately. Basically they are saving directly into the file on the server.

when the users are not connected to the domain network, they can still access the files in the mapped drive and make changes to those files (because those files have been designated as offline files and windows caches a copy of those files locally for the applicable users). when the user then reconnects to the domain network, Sync will automatically update the files that are in the server shared folder with the changes that were made to the applicable files when that user was offline (not connected to the domain network).

-for people that have a home/business workgroup environment (instead of a domain setup) and want to use Windows Offline Files feature, complete these steps...

computer A will be the pc that houses the files. Computer B and other computers that are on the network will access these files and update them when needed.

    1. on computer A, create a shared folder. During the creation, click the Caching button and select the all files and programs... option.
    2. add files into the shared folder that should be available when users are working offline (aka, when users are not connected to the home/business workgroup network).
    3. next, on Computer B (and other applicable computers in the network) go to My Computer and click the Map Network Drive button. Browse through the network to Computer A and choose the shared folder for mapping.

When the users save changes to the files in that mapped drive, the files will update immediately. Basically they are saving directly into the file on Computer A.

when the users are not connected to the workgroup network, they can still access the files in the mapped drive and make changes to those files (because those files have been designated as offline files and windows caches a copy of those files locally for the applicable users). when the user then reconnects to the workgroup network, Sync will automatically update the files that are in the Computer A shared folder with the changes that were made to the applicable files when that user was offline (not connected to the workgroup network).

*to see this work in real time, do this...

    1. On computer B, disconnect from the workgroup network.
    2. Open My computer and access a file in the mapped network drive.
    3. Make changes to that file and close it.
    4. Go to Computer A and open the file that was just changed on computer B. The file contents will not include the changes.
    5. return to computer B and reconnect to the network.
    6. open the mapped drive and then open the file (that is on computer A). The file will now be updated with the changes that were made when computer B was not connected to the network.
