I tried to get in to turn system restore off and do a scan but it just keeps taking me to different windows and stuff.. Would it be safe to just do a full restore on it? It is not used for anything other then games and internet surfing.

    TIA
    Katie

    Hi, me again,

After trying several things here is what is happening, EVERTIME I open up a folder IE: My computer, etc, it highlights everything within that folder and opens it ALL up.. But it will not let me get into properties etc. Unfortunatley, I cannot even do a clean boot sice this is a compaq and there rebooting system is intergrated within the sytem itself and I do beleive my system restore is off.. GEE WHIZ!! Dear Hubby would not beleive me when I told him that he was gonna get bugs from them joke sites!!

OH MAN, really I am not playing around... I thought I had it fixed and was going to use that computer to post on here, and as you can see in my previous post, this is what it is doing.. I did not type that, the computer did. I thought when I got it on line and was able to get to this site, it had quite messing up, I guess not. Man I sure hope someone can help me. This is aggravating.. :(

I try to stay away from helping people with Haunted PCs but I will make an exception since no one dropped a line so far.

~ Have you tried the Last Known Good Configuration or booting in the 'Safe Mode'? IF you don't know how to access either, after the PC is turned on, start tapping on the F8 key until a screen appears with a list of boot options (along with the LastKnown...).

Since this is not your PC I am not sure if you even know when exactly the problem started or what was the last major change occured?

So far it does sound like either a virial infection or XP has gone bye bye (meaning a clean install is needed)

but try to answer the first questions and re-post and we go from there... ;)

Thanks so much, but unfortunatley, whatever it is in there, is NASTY!! I got into this by doing the f-8, it would only go into safe mode, so I backed out and tried again, nothing, takes me directly to windows. So then I went into set-up f-1, and noticed that what ever it is bouncing around in there is also playing havoc on my Bios part. The date kept changing, it kept saying detecting hard drive etc, would not let me navigate at all. Now I am back into windows mode and the stupid calculator just keeps popping up.. So far 154 times and there are all kinds of numbers running across them.

I had a my ISP firewalled etra heavy because DH like to go to mad blast and stuff. Well he made me turn it down, and this is when I started having these problems with that computer!! I HATE compaq anyhow, but this is a bit ridiculous.. Not even give CD'S with there computers, and now that it is out from under warranty, I have to "purchase" them...

Sorry for gripping and thank you very much for answering me. I was so afraid someone would see that one post and think I was kidding around. I was so

I think I will call it a night but if you have anymore suggestions, I will happily try them..

    Thanks
    Katie

Well, it seems like that PC became a Motel6 for spyware!
Since you can boot in Safe Mode, you have access, you will need to do some analysis and more importantly cleanup.
Go ahead and read the stickies on the Spyware Specific section, starting with the READ THIS BEFORE.... By the way, it is long so grab a cup of coffee but please do read everything carefully and follow all the instructions. If you have any questions ask before doing anything wrong. Since this thread becase a Spyware related, I will ask one of the experts such as Chaslang or PhilliePhan to help you out and move the thread if need be....good luck!

    Hi

Thanks, but I cannot get on line in safe mode. :( I even tried to reload it, but whatever is in it has control over the restore drive too. When I got to the "options" mode in restore to do a destructive restore it went directly non destructive restore and started itself. Driving me nuts!! I guess I am going to have to call compaq and ask for the restore disk. :(

okay. so far this is what I have. Everytime I try to open a folder ETC, I get a thing asking me if I am sure I want to delete it. It is trying to delete everything on my computer, whatever it is. When I try to open msconfig, or anything that requires typing, it fills in a bunch of letters, quotations etc.. I seem to have no control over the keyboard etc..

I have download and burned and ran most of the items in the help section here with no avail. But I also cannot get on line with the other system to do updates..

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Katie

Re: Oh My Calculator coming up on its own, Ghost? UPDATE

Well after many hours working on that computer, I must tell you that I have encountered quite a  situation.

I was NOT hijacked or anything. I noticed after I found my compaq cd tools that even after a clean boot this computer was still going haywire!! So when Dear Hubby said check the keyboard I rolled my eyes at him. Said no it is not that!! Well low and behold, I changed the keyboard and everything "seems" to be back to normal.. In all my time dealing with computers all the way back to AST'S, I have never encountered something so annoying but yet so simple to fix. Apparently the batteries went dead in the cordless keyboard, which in turn was causing it to act all funky...

I hope that if this ever happens to anyone else they will see this.. And it helps them..

Thanks so much to all that looked and might had been pondering over my problem.

    You guys are the greatest...;)

Re: Oh My Calculator coming up on its own, Ghost? UPDATE

That'd do it...wish I knew that you were using a cordless, can't say I ever thought about asking since I assumed it was a normal PS/2 keyboard with a cord
I had some funky problems with a cordless trackball as well, especially when the batteries start to die...but not quite like the problems you had! Thanks for sharing the info Katie and have a good one! :)
