Oh, great, thank you! Sorry I hadn't checked back here sooner. Mmm, it doesn't have any "helpers" in the app (Yahoo Widget Engine 3.0) that phone home, right? I gave the Yahoo tool bar a miss some time ago because it "liked to feel connected" to the family tree.

A connection to the internet as a requirement? Sounds like "phone home". Uh-o, What have you found?

 

the install is similiar to the IE, WMP, Yahoo Messenger installers. You download a file, half a megabyte, that file downloads the files from Yahoo's servers. Then you have to have a connection to the internet if you want any type of updating widgets...weather for example. It has to connect to something to get weather for your area.

 

Thanks! I'm not quite clear whether it "phones home", but I will do some checking. I use Firefox, so I use the Forcastfox extension on that--and am already familiar with the privacy policy.

I use foobar2000 or sometimes Media Player Classic, so I avoid the "phone home" on that. (Of course, WMP can be tweaked with X-Setup Pro--thank you, Major Geeks--or with other methods. I just find the "gunk factor" annoying and MS deserves to be ignored.)

I got the vista pack, I kinda like it but it feels kinda buggy, and intrusive, also teh start button sucks, but I guess I'll get used to it, I am switching to vista when it comes out so I might as well get used to the interface.

That's my CentOS 4.3 box. I spend most of my time on it, and not my Windows XP Pro box. Which just happens to be down right now, serious hardware issues.
