my mother went down to FL today about 1pm and so i wait for the call telling me she made it ok and 5pm passed and no call 6pm came no call so thin i start to worry thin at 7pm i get a call from my grandmother (it hit me did something happen to her on the way down there) so i ask whats worng and she said nothing but my mother's [size=-1]transmission on her 1991 ford explorer went out 8miles to grovlenhttp://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/eek.gif she had about 30 to 50miles left to go. from what i was told the bolts on her transmission started to back out (how in the world could that happen?) she said when she got off the turn pike when she went to turn at the stop sign she hit the gas and it was slow at first but it seemed fine thin amile or 2 down the road it would not go nomore (i told her i should have gone with her because i would of stoped her right thin and there at the stop sign) well anyways any cars guys here that might give my some insight as to way this would happen and how much it would cost to fix? i already know her 2week trip will now last atless a monthhttp://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif one thing i am glad about is i get the house to myself longer thin 2weekes

oh yea this car has not had any major repairs i think the only major thing that has happen to this car is well nothing but a blower motor for the a/c

Ya know...it's very difficult to read your posts most of the time:( You would I'm sure, get more replies/assistance when you need it if you took a little more care with your spelling/grammatical presentation. No one here is looking for perfection! A little effort on your part would make a huge difference in how people respond to you and their willingness to do so in the first place. Many posts on this forum are skipped over completely due to lack of punctuation, poor spelling and things like l33t speak or AOL kiddie chat.

I myself have a major tendency toward run-on sentences:eek: LOL But I do take the time to fix my typos/spelling errors.

Check these out...they all work flawlessly for me.:)

ieSpell 2.1.1.325 <-- IE and/or add-ons such as Maxthon, Avant, etc.

    SpellBound 0.7.3 <-- Fire Fox

    And if you use OE:

    Spell Checker for OE 2.1

    Hope this helps!:)

Hunt down a junkyard, you might get lucky in finding a transmission on the cheap end. Other than that, a rebuilt one might cost $1000 or so. A new one, well, what Just Playin' posted is about right.

It does seem quite amazing that a transmission could simply go out I agree, but when you consider the stress on those mechanical parts every time you run your rig, it's not so surprising. Just vibration from the engine alone is immense, without even the movement of the transmission itself and all those screwed-up gear changes, making everything rattle crazily. You know how it feels on the shift when you stuff up a gear change.....vibrations up the arm etc. Imagine how the transmission feels getting that stress first hand.

Just give your Mom's car some love....see......even cars suffer from stress ;)

i know what y'all mean. A friend of ours runs a junkyard but they only carry older model cars because they can get them cheaper. (they have about 10acres of junked cars and most of them are VW buses and bugs) i just got some more info from down there and it don't really sound as bad as it did now it seems it ran the fluid out of her automatic transmission and back some bolts out and may of only blow the seal. i know quite abit about cars, motors and so on. i learned all i could about them from my dad before he went to jail. i will keep y'all updated. if her trip turns from a 2week trip to a 2month trip i don't know what i will do:(

well she got back yesterday and it took her 10hours to drive a 4hour drive. well she got back around 7pm last nite after i got all her stuff out of her car i pulled it around back and put it on car ramps so i could work on it in the morning. well when i went out there this morning i seen all the transmission fluid came out and was all over the place. (what a mess) i got under it and it was even a bigger mess under it. its going to take hours in this 100F heat just to replace a nice little $.50 seal that has failed. the seal goes behind the transmission between it and the transfer case for the 4X4

BTW if i am not on here for afew weeks dont worry all that would have happen is the car fell on me lol

Sounds like fun. Not only do I like computers, I also like working on my car. If I can do the repairs myself, I'd do them, just wish I had an engine lift, oh and a car lift.

I do miss the military days, where you can rent out a garage to work on your own car. I consider my own car like the Millennium Falcon, modified to my own poor designs. Unfortunately, it isn't as fast. :) Need to work on the mpg next.

There is no seal there. It is a gasket, and it wont fail on its own accord. If the transfer case bolts came loose then the fluid would pour out. Try just tightening the bolts first, if the gasket looks intact. If you have to pull that transfer case you're not gonna like the job. Also be sure that the fluid is not coming from the front of the transmission. The torque converter seal was a much more common failure on that tranny.

hi im a ford tech. theres a gasket between the trans and tranfer case that do leak, also take a look at the tail shaft of the transfer case where the driveshaft goes in. most common is the tourque converter seal and pump seal which will require removal of the trans. was she towing anything? ive seen a few trans get really hot and boil the fluid out of the vent and then the trans will slip due to lack of fluid. is it a 4r70w trans? if u can read the tag on the side. those also have a problem blowing valve body gaskets around the solenoids and accumilator.

It's a 1991. It's got an A4LD.And that gasket will only leak if the bolts come loose or the surfaces were not smooth in the first place. The gasket is too wide to fail.

i know that i some times call them the same thing without knowing it lol. and it seems as the gasket did fail as thats where the fluid it coming from.
she was not towing anything and i checked the rest and it seems to be in good shape
theres a new problem while she was coming back up her car started to make a noise and i was looking around it and found out half the transfer case damper is missing

i wish i still had our car lift:( no fun doing this on your back
the place that it is leaking from is the gasket right behind the transmission extension housing it is right between the transmission extension housing and the transfer case

damper as in the actual mount to the cross member or the one that some have on the back of the case that absorbs vibration and harmonics? if u mean the actual mount on the cross member with 2 18mm nuts is missing or loose that could be why the gasket failed because lack of support just banging around like that. if all goes well and u get it all sealed back up make sure u check the transmission and transfer case fluid, both call for mercon 3 check the dipstick just in case u dont wanna mix mercon-v and mercon-3. not sure if ive been any help lol im used to having my hands on em. hope it works out for u and your mom :)

ok i had to bring this back to ask something and say something.
1ST. the transmission case has a crack in it thats why it went out on her no way to fix it.
2nd. does anyone know of a good place to get a transmission casing cheap? or maybe get her a good deal? all she needs is the outter casing and maybe the extension housing

Ebay or a local pick-a-part. Get out the yellow pages and just call all of the junkyards.

Thats where I buy my parts from. :D

we tried that but the cheapest we could find one was $600!?!?!?! so what my mother is thinking about doing is trading it in and getting her self the car she wants (a 2001 ford explore sport trac) what she was going to do before this happen was give me that 1991 explorer and get herself the 2001 sport trac. does anyone think she might get much out of a trade or should she keep to the first plan and give me the 1991 model and get her self one with no problems?

If you do trade in...I would steer clear of the Sport Trac!!!! Everytime I have taken my explorer in, when they ask me the model...they say "is it a sport trac" with a look on their faces like, "oh my god please don't tell me it is"!!! A buddy of mine is a certified mechanic...and he said that the parts are more expensive, harder to find, and they are harder to work on!!!!

As far as trade in value...what I would do...go to the Kelley Blue Book website...look up the value of the trake (trade in value, not resale value) then call to the dealerships that you will most likely look for a trade...ask the service department for a price to do yadda, yadda, yadda to your truck (do not mention anything about your little plan of possibly trading it in, broken!! Just act like you know what the problem is, and you want a rough cost on fixing it!!)...then take that off of the trade in value of the truck!! That will at least give you somewhere to start!!!

    Hope that helped some!!!

A transmission has 1000's of intricate parts turning at 1000's of RPM's. Its likely something went wrong inside and caused the crack. Either way... I don't think it would be worth it to replace a cracked case on a transmission thats 14 years old.

It would be better getting a rebulit one or one from a junkyard w/ low miles.

  20. N5638J

    N5638J Guest

well that transmission never even had one problem (it never even slipped) from what people have told us the crack was caused by someone over tighting the bolts on the transmission pan when they put the filter kit in (not me that was done down in FL and i was 350miles away) and thats all that needs to be replaced
oh can you point me to some info on that? because i have never liked the sport Trac from the first day i seen one but thats what she wants so maybe that will change her mind.

  21. Jerkyking

    Jerkyking Sergeant Major

Yep, over tighting of bolt would do that. So is the crack causing a leak?

Trade in on a 91 won't cover the dealer fee to do the paper work (I know, been there. So I donnated it for a Tax write off).

  22. N5638J

    N5638J Guest

yep thats what is causing the leak. wont get no tax right off here because my mother is disabled so she does not have to do the taxes thing and i dont because i get SSI for being ADHD ADD and some other stuff i dont know right off hand so i cant work. (unless i get paid under the table for doing odd jobs I.E. dog training) hell that car has never had any major repair so i might just get it from her and do my damnest to fix the problem thin give it back to her and let her sell it if she wants or i will keep it and use it for off road use.

Well you can no longer take the full value as a write off anymore (2004 was the last year), now you can only get what the orgaization gets from it.

Cracks can be welded, if you can find a mechanic willing to try it you may be able to save the transmission. DON'T TRY YOURSELF... TRANSMISSION FLUID IS FLAMMABLE !!!. Then again there's JB weld !!!

  24. N5638J

    N5638J Guest

really????? thin why did it not catch fire when it was landing on the tail pipe on the way back from FL?!?!??!?!?! anyways no worry there as it is bone dry from it sitting there dripping out JB weld will not work from what i have been told
well damn here i was thinking it was like a shot gun shell hahaha
