    I have had some issues with "Security Toolbar 7.1" and "about:Blank" for the past week and finally stumbled into your forum.
    I have run the "about:Blank" special removal procedures and will attach the logs at the bottom of this post. I would greatly appreciate any help recovering my system.
    Thanks beforehand for any help you can offer.
    Jhonny

    (my wireless router [linksys] seems to have been corrupted also, could this have happened through this attack? I hardwired the comp last night because I couldn't access the wireless network.)

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

    Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis --> the last scan to run after renaming it.
    NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    Hey TimW!!!
    CounterSpy {attached}
    Bitdefender - from step 6 {when I ran this it shut down my computer, twice, after completing the scan but without a log. Up to that point nothing had been detected. The scan surpassed the 50k or so files "to be scanned" point when it shut down both times. A "your system has recovered from a critical error" advisement opened and was sent to Microsoft.}
    Panda Scan - from step 6 {could not get the online scan to work... I could get to the screen where I was to click the local disc icon but that page would not load... came up with "error on page"}
    runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat {attached}
    newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat {attached}
    HijackThis --> the last scan to run after renaming it. {will attach to next post}

    thanks,
    Jhonny

    First ..re-run Counterspy and have it fix/quarantine everything that it finds ...It's why we have you run it.

    Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9"
    Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
    MarketResearch

    Then use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Viewpoint
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Viewpoint

    Make sure you have no AV or Anti-spyware programs running that might prevent the HJT fix. Tell me if you get any messages when doing this.
    Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking fix, exit HJT

    Now attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    GetRun
    HJT
    Counterspy

    Hey TimW!!!

    Ok...
    I uninstalled all of the Java apps, but I don't have a "MarketResearch" in my add/remove list.

    I'll attach the logs to this message and the next.

    Thanks man, you guys are a God send!!!

    Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including CounterSpy, etc).

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!

    Hey TimW!!!

    Sorry I didn't get back to you earllier.
    Wanted to let you know I think everything is good and to thank you for all of the help.
    I have recommended your guy's site to many of my friends already (I hope that's ok, most of them are about as computer illiterate as I am).
    I followed through with your remaining advice and will look out for my system more carefully from now on.

    Thanks again, alot!!!!

    OK...
    I have McAffee(from Comcast), a-squared, spyware blaster, AdAware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy and Comodo BOclean...
    How should I run these in conjunction with each other?confused
    McAffee and Ad-Watch both have pop-up advisements (allow/block), which should I use?
    Is spyware blaster going to have the pop-ups also?

    I need some advice on how exactly to run these together...:eek:

    Also... I am kind of leary removing the Microsoft Java...
    the warning said that it would permanently delete the file and I would not be able to reinstall the removed files without the software containing it. I bought the system with XP already installed so I don't have the CD's... I've already downloaded the Java apps, will they be able to handle everything ok?

    I appreciate the help.

    As the cleanup link stated, you should only run one anti-virus program (your choice based on whether it is free or paid for).

    Spyware blaster is an active utility and will not notify you..it just blocks...which is good.

    Occasionally running adaware, spybot , etc for backup protection is fine.

    The Java we had you uninstall is not something that you need worry about..it's just old versions that are outdated and prone to virus/spyware attacks (people find ways of exploiting them). Keeping the latest versions will reduce your vulnerability to those types of attacks.
