I know that one can only have a single virus scanner on a computer, but does the same rule apply to spyware? As with virus scanners, definitions are different across different apps. I use Webroot Syp Sweeper as my primary, and also manually sweep on weekends with AdAware and Spybot, frequently finding additional theats.

Can I install Microsoft Defender or will one or the other not work together on the same platform?

Windows XP SP2 with all the security fixes, IE7 RC.

Yes same issues can happen if you install and run two live/background scanning anti-spyware applications as in say Spysweeper & Windows Defender, so only pick one of these to install at once.

However you can install and run a few of the on-demand scanners as in Ad-Aware SE Free, SpybotS&D ( without Tea-Timer active), A-Squared etc
