I have $2500 to spend on a laptop.

Do I get a MAC or PC based?

I'm basically interested in using it for suring and MAYBE editing pics.
Leaning towards the Apple for that reason (picture editing), but I just need something, fast with lots of RAM.

    Suggestions?

    Summary:

OS X good, hardware cost bad
Windows in general is meh, hardware cost is good.
One can dual boot OS X and XP, one cannot.
OS X is much more secure than Windows XP, and probably Vista.
OS X has less virus and spyware threats (almost none).
Most software is written in mind for Windows. Software support is considerably more there.
Both would work about the same for picture editing and surfing.

    I suppose.

That wasn't what the poster asked though.

And what are you currently used to? A lot of people find switching to Mac from Windows (and sometimes vice-versa) can be a challenge, but you'll get used to it.

On paper, you could get something that would have better hardware for a Windows based PC, but the software for Mac is very powerful and very secure.

Yea and those projects are debatingly legal, but your new intel macbook pro will legaly (with purchase of xp lisence) run both np.

I have a pc and a dell laptop both running windows, my son has a Mac laptop.
He is forever coming over to use my pc for different applications which he cant get for his Mac. Although it is a nice machine I wish he hadnt bought it. It is just too restricted. He uses it to edit photos mainly but also uses mine for the same purpose and seems to have no problems. I have no issues with viruses or adware as I keep them up to date.

It was enough, just that the email notifications weren't working, dunno what happened.

Well, I think I'm gonna hold off on the Mac for now as some people have reportedly been having problems with it shutting off on it's own - sporadically.

I'll probably get a windows laptop for now and in the near future get the smaller Macbook for portability.

I bet there is an application for what he wanted to do.

Not everything has to be a Microsoft product :)

Games aside, there is nothing a Mac cannot do vs Windows.
