i have an old laptop with 98 on it and for some reason the serial port has moved to com port 5 and i need it on 1,2,3,or 4 for some programs that i have .
how can i get it back to one of those com ports ? 98 does not have the advanced button to asign the serial port a new com port . please help

    thanks

install linux all the hardware drivers are already in the kernel, as for windows 98 you have to provide drives manually and i have no great experiences doing this its just a waste of precious time just think about trying linux

what do you use this machine for

Although this mentions modems, if you scroll down it talks about resource conflicts and below this, how to change the settings.

Open control panel, then system. Select the device manager tab and scroll down to Ports: COM & LPT."Click the plus sign to expand it and it will show all of the currently detected serial devices. Double-click on COM5 item to open the properties and see if you can change the COM port there.
