Old speakers with new PC system

I have 2 satellite and 1 subwoofer digital speakers made by Boston Acoustics. Model # BA735. These speakers are 5 years old and came with the Gateway PC I purchased way back when. I just purchased a new PC, Dell P4, 2.8, XP Home, SoundMAX Digital Intergrated Audio without speakers. Wanted to use my old speakers. There is nothing wrong with these speakers. They worked just fine in my old system. I setup the new system, plugged in the speakers and NO SOUND. The jack from the speakers has only 1 notch on the plug. I doubled check my sons new pc and the jack from his speakers has two notches on the plug. So I went to Radio Shack and purchased a mono plug to stero plug adapter. Still NO SOUND.
I went into the BIOS and made sure the onboard audio was turned on. Yes it was. I checked the volume and mutes in volume control. All were good. I checked the harware properties for the audio, all was good. What could be the problem?
HELP.................

Did you plug it into the digital output jack, and do you have digital output (SPDIF, usually) enabled? Boston Acoustics FAQ link for your speakers: http://www.bostonacoustics.com/faq.asp?p=multi#0

 

the original plug that came with the speakers are:

pc to back of subwoofer, the jack plugged into the sub is plugged into the "digital in"

I mean, is it plugged into your PC's onboard soundcard digital output also, instead of the analog speaker output of your soundcard?

 

yes it was plugged into the digital output. i fixed the problem......i took the 6 month old Sound Blaster card out of my old system and into the new system it went......DANG, i have sound.....
