Old Symantec files found

Running Win. 98 SE, removed Norton AV over 1 year ago and have been using Avast! ever since, recently came across 3 Symantec folders in "Program Files", I started placing them 1 at a time in the recycle bin and rebooting to make sure it was safe to really delete them, no problem with 2 of the folders but the 3rd one gave me a DOS like screen on reboot and said that Windows needed a file I had removed to run a program, the name of the folder is "symevnt.386", 122kb, and is a Virtual Device Driver, I restored the folder to its original place, rebooted and all is well - my question is: Can this file be removed somehow ?? I have NOTHING installed from Symantec anymore - Not sure if this is even relevant, but in MSCONFIG, under the "Config.Sys" tab is - "Device"= c:\windows\emm386.exe noems, this HAS a check mark next to it.

The file is being looked for at startup. Remove it from your startups and that should solve the problem.

 

Robert, I cannot find anything in Start-up that even remotely resembles the file in question, I suppose this could be a "shared" file ??, or a bad uninstall of Norton way back when, I did use Nortons removal tools and at the time everything seemed to go ok, and as I said, everything is working fine right now, just wanted to remove all traces of Symantec

 

I did a bit of research and apparently this is a bit of a bitch to get around. Go to this site and it may solve the problem but make sure you back up any registry alterations you make

Hey Guys, did a bit of research after posting to Robert and found this link ( http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/symevnt.htm), I used the "manual" mode (scan down page) of removal and it worked like a charm - and yes I did back up both the entry and the whole registry BEFORE I did anything - again, Thanks for the help
