Ok, a couple of days back I installed a new 160GB disk in my son's laptop. We opted for a clean install, and then attach the old disk as an external USB drive in order to retrieve more or less important files.

What happened was - some trojan (found, but unspecified by Avast) had infected the system. I cannot say for sure that this means the old disk is infected; something strange happened when installing Firefox.

We felt it most safe to reformat and reinstall the new drive, and things are just fine now.

But we would still like to retrieve some files from the old drive.

Could you please advice me on how to do this the safe way?

I would suggest that you first download and install both SuperAnti-spyware and MalwareBytes Anti-malware to the new drive. Then attach the old drive and have both programs scan both drives. SAS first and then MBAM ....you can attach those logs when you are done so we can see if further action is needed.
