older computer issues

    hello to all.New to this site but not computers,my issue is this,my neices computer has a password and since she's not that old 14-15 she had it password protected and cant remember the password!! the system is a Gateway and even when you try to get to the settings on the thing it still asks for a password,not only that,I completely changed the hardrive to install ME(it has win 98). and it still asks for a password I'm really getting frustrated and she cant afford to put the comp. in the shop,can anyone help me please thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks.
    Sorry that I have no answer for you, but hoping you didn't mess things up by switching drives around like that.
    Doesn't usually work since the other machine may have different hardware configurations.

    Will this password cracker help? the top link works for Windows 95, 98, and ME. I think all you need to do is install it on a flash drive and plug it into her computer. Then again, I'm not certain since my friends are the ones that are into hacking and cracking.

    Ok,the password recovery thing didnt work.Is'nt there a jumper i can switch around,thenput it back to get away from the whole password?.....thanks :confused

    It sounds to me like the bios is where the password is.

    If this is a desktop or tower computer, There should be a jumper or switch on the mainboard to reset it to it's defaults. That should clear the password. If you cant find the jumper, remove the battery from the mainboard for a few minutes, reinsert it and the password should be gone.

    If there is a password on the Win98 HD, just hit the Esc key and the machine will boot without the password. Thats one of the main reasons Win98 is so looked down on. It has virtually no security. ME is not much better.
