I think it don't support 4gb sticks in each slot the limit i think it's 2gb ddr3 in each slot which total's up to 4gb in total memory. That is why it's making the beeps as it is.

After closing the case up, I plugged in the mouse, keyboard, ethernet and monitor cables back in first. As soon as I plugged in the power cable, the fan started spinning really fast/loud and there was three quick beeps that repeated. I never hit the power on button.

That could of course be the case. It could also be the case that the ram purchased is not compatible with the mobo.

If the pc is using DDR3 ram then it is more likely that it can accept >2GB sticks in each slot.

My current mobo uses DDR3 ram and has no issues with 2x 8Gb ram modules in each slot

It would of course be a lot easier to determine this if one knew the make and model number of this mobo. Regrettable that the op did not think of noting this down when he tried to replace the ram but with a bad back I can understand that he probably had other things on his mind.

Yea, the pain was getting pretty bad after opening it up, taking it outside to open up and blow out the dust, and trying the ram 4 different times and hooking everything up each time. I'm glad I at least wrote down the numbers on the existing ram, and ordered an identical stick.

I wanted to post an update. The replacement ram arrived today and I just installed it. It works great! I know 4g is still not much, but web surfing with 5-6 tabs open at a time is MUCH faster. Definitely a great improvement for under $10.
Thanks again for the help fellow Geeks!

Put the 2 GB Ram stick in the second slot of the same colour.
If it's not detected, remove it.

Please see my post above, it's detected and working great now.

Tater suggesting to put the 2gb RAM stick in the spare slot to see if it will detect 6gb in total RAM instead of 4gb if not then remove it and run the 4gb stick instead.

The 4gb stick did not work when I tried it that way. It has already been sent back for a return. I bought an 2gb stick identical to the original 2gb ram and it works fine now with both in.

As an aside (and perhaps you may not wish to do this) but if you replaced the 300Gb WD mechanical HDD with an SSD this would speed up you system also. I would guess that your mobo is not SATA3 capable but it almost certainly is SATA2

That's I great idea and I hadn't thought of it, but I probably shouldn't put more $ into a PC this old.
